She is best known for her work on the philosophy of modern physics in the 1930s, some of which emerged from intense discussions with Heisenberg and Weizsäcker in Leipzig. Hermann's aim was to counter the threat to the Kantian notion of causality coming from quantum mechanics. She also discussed in depth the question of 'hidden variables' (including the first critique of von Neumann's alleged impossibility proof) and provided an extensive analysis of Bohr's notion of complementarity. This volume includes translations of Hermann's two most important essays on this topic: one hitherto unpublished and one translated here into English for the first time. It also brings together recent scholarly contributions by historians and philosophers of science, physicists, and philosophers and educators following in Hermann's steps. Hermann's work places her in the first rank among philosophers who wrote about modern physics in the first half of the last century. Those interested in the many fields to which she contributed will find here a comprehensive discussion of her philosophy of physics that places it in the context of her wider work."--Provided by publisher. 410 0$aStudies in history and philosophy of science (Dordrecht, Netherlands) ;$v42.$x2215-1958 606 $aMathematicians$zGermany 606 $aPhilosophers$zGermany 606 $aPhysics$xPhilosophy 606 $aHistory 606 $aEthics 606 $aModern philosophy 606 $aPhilosophy of nature 606 $aPolitical philosophy 606 $aHistory of Science$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/731000 606 $aEthics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/E14000 606 $aModern Philosophy$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/E19000 606 $aPhilosophy of Nature$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/E34040 606 $aPolitical Philosophy$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/E37000 606 $aEthics & moral philosophy$2bicssc 606 $aWestern philosophy, from c 1900$2bicssc 606 $aPhilosophy$2bicssc 606 $aSocial & political philosophy$2bicssc 606 $aHistory of science$2bicssc 606 $aMATHEMATICS$xEssays$2bisacsh 606 $aMATHEMATICS$xPre-Calculus$2bisacsh 606 $aMATHEMATICS$xReference$2bisacsh 606 $aMathematicians$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01012154 606 $aPhilosophers$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01060746 606 $aPhysics$xPhilosophy$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01063079 607 $aGermany$2fast 615 0$aMathematicians 615 0$aPhilosophers 615 0$aPhysics$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aHistory. 615 0$aEthics. 615 0$aModern philosophy. 615 0$aPhilosophy of nature. 615 0$aPolitical philosophy. 615 14$aHistory of Science. 615 24$aEthics. 615 24$aModern Philosophy. 615 24$aPhilosophy of Nature. 615 24$aPolitical Philosophy. 615 7$aEthics & moral philosophy. 615 7$aWestern philosophy, from c 1900. 615 7$aPhilosophy. 615 7$aSocial & political philosophy. 615 7$aHistory of science. 615 7$aMATHEMATICS$xEssays. 615 7$aMATHEMATICS$xPre-Calculus. 615 7$aMATHEMATICS$xReference. 615 7$aMathematicians. 615 7$aPhilosophers. 615 7$aPhysics$xPhilosophy. 676 $a193 702 $aCrull$b Elise M$g(Elise Marie).$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aBacciagaluppi$b Guido$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 801 0$bN$T 801 1$bN$T 801 2$bEBLCP 801 2$bN$T 801 2$bYDX 801 2$bAZU 801 2$bUAB 801 2$bIOG 801 2$bLOA 801 2$bU3W 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bKSU 801 2$bEZ9 801 2$bINT 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bUKMGB 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bFIE 801 2$bAU@ 801 2$bUKAHL 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bERF 801 2$bLEATE 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bEUN 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$b| OCLCQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bCaOWtU 912 $a9910254777003321 996 $aGrete Hermann - Between Physics and Philosophy$91998301 997 $aUNINA
