The late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries were undoubtedly a period of transition and redefinition of what constituted the supernatural, at the interface between folk belief and the philosophies of the learned. For the latter the eradication of such beliefs equated with progress and civilization but for others, such as the devout, witch belief was a matter of faith, such that fear and dread of witches and their craft lasted well beyond the era of the major witch-hunts. This study seeks to illuminate the distinctiveness of the Scottish experience, to assess the impact of enlightenment thought upon witch belief, and to understand how these beliefs operated across all levels of Scottish society. 410 0$aPalgrave Historical Studies in Witchcraft and Magic 606 $aGreat Britain?History 606 $aCivilization?History 606 $aReligion?History 606 $aHistory, Modern 606 $aSocial history 606 $aHistory of Britain and Ireland$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/717020 606 $aCultural History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/723000 606 $aHistory of Religion$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/1A7000 606 $aModern History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/713000 606 $aSocial History$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/724000 607 $aScotland$2fast 608 $aHistory.$2fast 615 0$aGreat Britain?History. 615 0$aCivilization?History. 615 0$aReligion?History. 615 0$aHistory, Modern. 615 0$aSocial history. 615 14$aHistory of Britain and Ireland. 615 24$aCultural History. 615 24$aHistory of Religion. 615 24$aModern History. 615 24$aSocial History. 676 $a941 700 $aHenderson$b Lizanne$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0910701 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910254775803321 996 $aWitchcraft and Folk Belief in the Age of Enlightenment$92137985 997 $aUNINA
