They examine urban and rural witchcraft conflicts from early modern times to the present, from a region hitherto rarely taken into consideration in witchcraft research. Special attention is given to healers, midwives, and cunning folk, including archaic sorcerer figures such as the táltos; whose ambivalent role is analysed in social, legal, medical and religious contexts. This volume examines how waves of persecution emerged and declined, and how witchcraft was decriminalised. Fascinating case-studies on vindictive witch-hunters, quarrelling neighbours, rivalling midwives, cunning shepherds, weather magician impostors, and exorcist Franciscan friars provide a colourful picture of Hungarian and Transylvanian folk beliefs and mythologies, as well as insights into historical and contemporary issues. 410 0$aPalgrave Historical Studies in Witchcraft and Magic,$x2731-5649 606 $aEurope$xHistory$x1492- 606 $aEurope, Central$xHistory 606 $aRussia$xHistory 606 $aEurope, Eastern$xHistory 606 $aSoviet Union$xHistory 606 $aCivilization$xHistory 606 $aHistory of Early Modern Europe 606 $aHistory of Germany and Central Europe 606 $aHistory of Modern Europe 606 $aRussian, Soviet, and East European History 606 $aCultural History 615 0$aEurope$xHistory$x1492-. 615 0$aEurope, Central$xHistory. 615 0$aRussia$xHistory. 615 0$aEurope, Eastern$xHistory. 615 0$aSoviet Union$xHistory. 615 0$aCivilization$xHistory. 615 14$aHistory of Early Modern Europe. 615 24$aHistory of Germany and Central Europe. 615 24$aHistory of Modern Europe. 615 24$aRussian, Soviet, and East European History. 615 24$aCultural History. 676 $a940.903 702 $aKlaniczay$b Gábor$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aPócs$b Éva$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910254764903321 996 $aWitchcraft and Demonology in Hungary and Transylvania$92206144 997 $aUNINA
