Eleven men who successfully desisted from substance abuse and offending were interviewed to determine how their significant therapeutic relationships facilitated this life change. Data is integrated with a new psychodynamic framework, relational analytic theory, which focuses clinical attention on the qualities and processes of the therapeutic relationship. A therapy model is developed which addresses how to attain and maintain therapeutic engagement, treat client symptoms, and utilize therapeutic conflict to develop client capacity for internal conflict and personal agency, functions critical to resolving addictive behavior. Societal and cultural obstacles to treatment are addressed including group stigmatisation, a lack of funding, and our current manual and group-based treatment protocols. 606 $aPsychotherapy 606 $aCounseling 606 $aForensic psychology 606 $aPersonality 606 $aSocial psychology 606 $aRehabilitation 606 $aPsychotherapy and Counseling$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/Y12010 606 $aForensic Psychology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/Y20130 606 $aPersonality and Social Psychology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/Y20050 606 $aRehabilitation$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/H55006 615 0$aPsychotherapy. 615 0$aCounseling. 615 0$aForensic psychology. 615 0$aPersonality. 615 0$aSocial psychology. 615 0$aRehabilitation. 615 14$aPsychotherapy and Counseling. 615 24$aForensic Psychology. 615 24$aPersonality and Social Psychology. 615 24$aRehabilitation. 676 $a616.8914 700 $aBenveniste$b Debra H$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0772576 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910254675503321 996 $aChanging Substance Abuse and Criminal Behavior Through Therapeutic Relationships$91577500 997 $aUNINA
