There are very different stages of implementing decentralization in practice. This called for research aiming to understand the following questions: (i) why do some water agencies succeed more than others? (ii) What are the variables involved in such reform process? (iii) which variables have a positive or a negative impact on the implementation of decentralization processes? (iv) Which variables could be affected by policy interventions, and how? This study aimed to answer these questions through the following objectives: (i) analyze the factors that have potentially affected the results of decentralization process in SSA basins, and (ii) analyze the performance of decentralization process in SSA basins. Qualitative and quantitative approaches were used. The main findings are that water scarcity is a major stimulus to reform; water user associations, if not well prepared and trained, may deter the decentralization process; and being part of an existing treaty over an international basin helps foster the process. Conditions improving decentralization performance include: scarcity of water resources, longer period of implementation, bottom-up creation, and appropriate budgetary support. . 410 0$aSpringerBriefs in Water Science and Technology,$x2194-7244 606 $aEnvironmental management 606 $aSustainable development 606 $aClimate change 606 $aEnvironmental Management$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/U17009 606 $aWater Policy/Water Governance/Water Management$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/215000 606 $aSustainable Development$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/U34000 606 $aClimate Change Management and Policy$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/314000 606 $aClimate Change$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/U12007 615 0$aEnvironmental management. 615 0$aSustainable development. 615 0$aClimate change. 615 14$aEnvironmental Management. 615 24$aWater Policy/Water Governance/Water Management. 615 24$aSustainable Development. 615 24$aClimate Change Management and Policy. 615 24$aClimate Change. 676 $a333.7 700 $aMutondo$b Joao$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01059430 702 $aFarolfi$b Stefano$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 702 $aDinar$b Ariel$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910254126103321 996 $aWater Governance Decentralization in Sub-Saharan Africa$92505852 997 $aUNINA
