It also proposes measures to remove barriers hindering their widespread implementation, formulates policies for their implementation, and evaluates their economic, energy, and environmental consequences. The book presents a preliminary assessment of the likely cost and the impact of widespread adoption of district heating networks and cogeneration carried out in three cities that represent the variety of climatic conditions in the EU. Based on this assessment, it is estimated that by undertaking the maximum economically feasible implementation across the EU, fuel savings of ?95M/year would be achieved, representing energy savings of 6,400 petajoules (PJ), which is around 15% of the total final energy consumption in the EU in 2013 (46,214.5 PJ). Using simple and quick calculations and not specific software, the method used allows the evaluation of the potential benefits of retrofitting existing power plants into cogeneration plants and connecting them to nearby heating networks. In light of increasing energy costs and environmental concerns, the book is of interest to heating engineers, city planners, and policy-makers around the globe. 606 $aEnergy systems 606 $aEnergy policy 606 $aEnergy and state 606 $aRegional planning 606 $aUrban planning 606 $aEnergy security 606 $aEnergy Systems$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/115000 606 $aEnergy Policy, Economics and Management$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/112000 606 $aLandscape/Regional and Urban Planning$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/J15000 606 $aEnergy Security$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/121000 615 0$aEnergy systems. 615 0$aEnergy policy. 615 0$aEnergy and state. 615 0$aRegional planning. 615 0$aUrban planning. 615 0$aEnergy security. 615 14$aEnergy Systems. 615 24$aEnergy Policy, Economics and Management. 615 24$aLandscape/Regional and Urban Planning. 615 24$aEnergy Security. 676 $a621.042 700 $aColmenar-Santos$b Antonio$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0866278 702 $aBorge-Díez$b David$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 702 $aRosales-Asensio$b Enrique$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910253981803321 996 $aDistrict Heating and Cooling Networks in the European Union$91933346 997 $aUNINA
