Constructing Conviviality in Online Interaction. 330 $aThis book explores communication on Facebook, developing the new theoretical concept of context design as a way of understanding the dynamics of online interaction. Against a backdrop of fake news and other controversies surrounding online political debate, the authors focus on inadvertent acts of offence on Facebook; that is, when users of the site unwittingly offend or are offended by the airing of political or religious views, or of opinions deemed racist or sexist. Drawing on a survey of Facebook users, they explain why instances of offence occur and what users report doing in response. They argue that Facebook users contribute to the construction of a particular social space, one that is characterised by online conviviality and a belief that Facebook is not the place for serious debate. These views in turn shape the kind of political debate that can take place on the site. This thought-provoking book will appeal to scholars and students of applied linguistics, and anyone interested in the role of social media in contemporary political and social life. 410 0$aPalgrave pivot. 606 $aApplied linguistics 606 $aSociolinguistics 606 $aDiscourse analysis 606 $aSocial media 606 $aCommunication 606 $aApplied Linguistics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/N13000 606 $aSociolinguistics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/N44000 606 $aDiscourse Analysis$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/N51000 606 $aSocial Media$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/412020 606 $aMedia and Communication$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/412010 615 0$aApplied linguistics. 615 0$aSociolinguistics. 615 0$aDiscourse analysis. 615 0$aSocial media. 615 0$aCommunication. 615 14$aApplied Linguistics. 615 24$aSociolinguistics. 615 24$aDiscourse Analysis. 615 24$aSocial Media. 615 24$aMedia and Communication. 676 $a302.2 700 $aTagg$b Caroline$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0479446 702 $aSeargeant$b Philip$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 702 $aBrown$b Amy Aisha$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910252722303321 996 $aTaking Offence on Social Media$92534609 997 $aUNINA
