Horowitz relays the paradoxes of a synthetic Jewish and Russian self-consciousness in order to correct critics who have always considered Russians and Jews as polar opposites, enemies, and incompatible. In fact, the best Russian-Jewish intellectuals-Semyon Dubnov, Maxim Vinaver, Mikhail Gershenzon, and a number of Zionist writers and thinkers-were actually inspired by Russian culture and attempted to develop a sui generis Jewish creativity in three languages on Russian soil. 606 $aJews$zRussia$xIntellectual life$y19th century 607 $aRussia$xIntellectual life$y1801-1917 615 0$aJews$xIntellectual life 676 $a305.8924047 700 $aHorowitz$b Brian$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut.$0878943 712 02$aNational Endowment for the Humanities and The Andrew W.
