Although they represent the main fruit production on a worldwide scale, very little is known about their original domestication and routes of introduction into the Mediterranean and temperate Europe: few organic remains identified as citrus have been found on archaeological sites. Nevertheless, evidence has been retrieved for various periods in the form of pollen grains, seeds, rind fragments, and occasionally wood and whole fruits in areas of primo-domestication, Asian, and from sites along the potential routes of diffusion. Iconographic figurations and textual references also exist. The contributions presented here ? written by researchers specializing in phylogeny, taxonomy, morphometry, archaeobotany, history, iconography, the study of classical letters, and curators of collections ? present the latest knowledge relating to the taxonomy of the Citrus genus and the methods used in attempting to identify ancient specimens. Analysis of botanical remains and a variety of other sources, has allowed the citrus diversity in China, India, Israel, Egypt, Italy, and North-West Europe to be described. Greek, Latin and medieval texts have been explored in order to identify recognized species, cultivation methods, modes of consumption, uses, and virtues attributed to citrus fruits since their first occurrences. The conservatories and germplasm collections of citrus are presented from a historical point of view, as are the important role they play in genetic research to improve cultivars, the conservation of rare and ancient varieties, and the role of informing the general public is also emphasized. The symbolic representation of citrus fruits in the arts, literature, and philosophy completes this overview, and fills a gap concerning these emblematic Mediterranean fruit. 517 $aAGRUMED 606 $aHistory & Archaeology 606 $aagrumes (culture) 606 $aarchéobotanique 606 $aagrumes (histoire) 606 $acitrus fruit 606 $aarchaeobotany 606 $acitrus cultivation 606 $aMediterranean 610 $aMediterranean 610 $acitrus cultivation 610 $acitrus fruit 610 $aarchaeobotany 615 4$aHistory & Archaeology 615 4$aagrumes (culture) 615 4$aarchéobotanique 615 4$aagrumes (histoire) 615 4$acitrus fruit 615 4$aarchaeobotany 615 4$acitrus cultivation 615 4$aMediterranean 700 $aBarone Lumaga$b Maria Rosaria$01365262 701 $aBloquel$b Emmanuel$01365263 701 $aBouchaud$b Charlène$01309168 701 $aCastillo$b Cristina$0176122 701 $aCelant$b Alessandra$01239454 701 $aCostantino$b Gilles$01365264 701 $aCoubray$b Sylvie$01294573 701 $aCurk$b Franck$01365265 701 $aDe Carolis$b Ernesto$01320559 701 $aFiorentino$b Girolamo$01297176 701 $aFroelicher$b Yann$01365266 701 $aFuller$b Dorian Q$01365267 701 $aGrasso$b Anna Maria$01365268 701 $aGröschel$b Claudia$01365269 701 $aHallavant$b Charlotte$01365270 701 $aKingwell-Banham$b Eleanor$01365271 701 $aLanggut$b Dafna$01365272 701 $aLemoine$b Michel$0442391 701 $aLuro$b François$01365273 701 $aMane$b Perrine$0318845 701 $aMavelli$b Fabio$01365274 701 $aMenale$b Bruno$0724515 701 $aMorales$b Jacob$01365275 701 $aOllitrault$b Patrick$01365276 701 $aOsanna$b Massimo$0327918 701 $aPagnoux$b Clémence$01365277 701 $aPailly$b Olivier$01365278 701 $aPaulus$b Helmut-Eberhard$01365279 701 $aQin$b Ling$01365280 701 $aRiolacci$b Simone$01365281 701 $aRuas$b Marie-Pierre$01238309 701 $aRusso Ermolli$b Elda$01365282 701 $aSchram$b Valérie$01365283 701 $aTomu$b Bruno$01365284 701 $aTur$b Isabelle$01365285 701 $avan der Meer$b Wouter$01365286 701 $avan der Veen$b Marijke$01365287 701 $aVaramo$b François$01365288 701 $aWeisskopf$b Alison$01365289 701 $aZech-Matterne$b Véronique$01296892 701 $aZech-Matterne$b Véronique$01296892 701 $aFiorentino$b Girolamo$01297176 801 0$bFR-FrMaCLE 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910251397303321 996 $aAGRUMED: Archaeology and history of citrus fruit in the Mediterranean$93386901 997 $aUNINA
