Review of selected models and simulations. 330 $aRAND conducted a lessons learned examination of operations analysis, modeling, and simulation in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. This report identifies ways in which analysts have attempted to support commanders' decisions in counterinsurgency and irregular warfare, describes many of the models and tools they employed, provides insight into the challenges they faced, and suggests ways in which the application of modeling, simulation, and analysis might be improved for current and future operations. RAND identified four broad categories of decisions: force protection, logistics, campaign assessment, and force structuring. Modeling, simulation, and analysis were most effective in supporting force protection and logistics decisions, and least effective in supporting campaign assessment and force structuring. 606 $aCounterinsurgency$xSimulation methods$xEvaluation$zUnited States 606 $aIrregular warfare$xEvaluation$xSimulation methods$zUnited States 606 $aSoldiers$xProtection$xEvaluation$xSimulation methods$zUnited States 606 $aLogistics$xSimulation methods$xEvaluation$zUnited States 606 $aMilitary planning$xSimulation methods$xEvaluation$zUnited States 606 $aDecision making$xEvaluation$xSimulation methods 606 $aOperations research$xComputer simulation 606 $aAfghan War, 2001-2021$xComputer simulation 606 $aIraq War, 2003-2011 606 $aMilitary Science - General$2HILCC 606 $aMilitary & Naval Science$2HILCC 606 $aLaw, Politics & Government$2HILCC 615 0$aCounterinsurgency$xSimulation methods$xEvaluation 615 0$aIrregular warfare$xEvaluation$xSimulation methods 615 0$aSoldiers$xProtection$xEvaluation$xSimulation methods 615 0$aLogistics$xSimulation methods$xEvaluation 615 0$aMilitary planning$xSimulation methods$xEvaluation 615 0$aDecision making$xEvaluation$xSimulation methods. 615 0$aOperations research$xComputer simulation. 615 0$aAfghan War, 2001-2021$xComputer simulation. 615 0$aIraq War, 2003-2011. 615 7$aMilitary Science - General 615 7$aMilitary & Naval Science 615 7$aLaw, Politics & Government 676 $a956.7044/38 700 $aConnable$b Ben$0924041 702 $aLander$b Natasha 702 $aDoll$b Abby 702 $aDoll$b Abby 702 $aPerry$b Walt L 702 $aPerry$b Walt L 702 $aMadden$b Dan 712 02$aNational Defense Research Institute (U.S.) 712 02$aInternational Security and Defense Policy Center 712 02$aRand Corporation 801 0$bPQKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910220127703321 996 $aModeling, simulation, and operations analysis in Afghanistan and Iraq : operational vignettes, lessons learned, and a survey of selected efforts$92786338 997 $aUNINA
