A product of the intellectual elite, but always nourished by the many fruits of its applications, science appears today to be a perfect system, whose laws and discoveries guide all human activities. Yet the foundations of its authority remain an open question, entailing disquieting aspects that are also to be identified in modern science. Furthermore it is seen to be exerting an increasing power over mankind. Readers are invited to follow an itinerary through the history of science, a voyage which, in the end, enables them to catch a glimpse of two divergent futures: One in which science accelerates the downfall of Homo sapiens, and another in which it helps our species to engage in a new and positive adventure, whose outcome nobody can know. 606 $aPhysics 606 $aPopular works 606 $aHistory 606 $aHistory and Philosophical Foundations of Physics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/P29000 606 $aPopular Science, general$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/Q00007 606 $aHistory of Science$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/731000 615 0$aPhysics. 615 0$aPopular works. 615 0$aHistory. 615 14$aHistory and Philosophical Foundations of Physics. 615 24$aPopular Science, general. 615 24$aHistory of Science. 676 $a500 676 $a509 676 $a530 676 $a530.01 700 $aRonchi$b Claudio$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0791364 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910300369603321 996 $aThe Tree of Knowledge$92494793 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04300oam 2200685I 450 001 9910155037103321 005 20240505160152.0 010 $a1-317-40270-7 010 $a1-315-68228-1 010 $a1-317-40271-5 024 7 $a10.4324/9781315682280 035 $a(CKB)4340000000019321 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4756210 035 $a(OCoLC)967392260 035 $a(BIP)63338206 035 $a(BIP)52962625 035 $a(EXLCZ)994340000000019321 100 $a20180706d2017 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $2rdacontent 182 $2rdamedia 183 $2rdacarrier 200 10$aRacialized identities in second language learning $espeaking Blackness in Brazil /$fUju Anya 205 $a1st ed. 210 1$aNew York :$cRoutledge,$d2017. 215 $a1 online resource (262 pages) 225 0 $aRoutledge Advances in Second Language Studies ;$v1 311 08$a1-138-92778-3 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $a1. More broadly, this book introduces the idea of second language learning as "transformative socialization": how learners, instructors, and their communities shape new communicative selves as they collaboratively construct and negotiate race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and social class identities. Uju Anya's study follows African American college students learning Portuguese in Afro-Brazilian communities, and their journeys in learning to do and speak blackness in Brazil. Video-recorded interactions, student journals, interviews, and writing assignments show how multiple intersecting identities are enacted and challenged in second language learning. Thematic, critical, and conversation analyses describe ways black Americans learn to speak their material, ideological, and symbolic selves in Portuguese and how linguistic action reproduces or resists power and inequity. The book addresses key questions on how learners can authentically and effectively participate in classrooms and target language communities to show that black students' racialized identities and investments in these communities greatly influence their success in second language learning and how successful others perceive them to be. 606 $aSecond language acquisition$xSocial aspects$xResearch 606 $aAfrican American students$xLanguage$xResearch 606 $aAfrican American students$xLanguage$vCase studies 606 $aBlack English$xSocial aspects$xResearch 606 $aAfrican Americans$xEducation$xResearch 606 $aLanguage and education$zUnited States 606 $aSociolinguistics$xResearch 606 $aLanguage and education$zBrazil 606 $aMultilingualism$xSocial aspects$xResearch 615 0$aSecond language acquisition$xSocial aspects$xResearch. 615 0$aAfrican American students$xLanguage$xResearch. 615 0$aAfrican American students$xLanguage 615 0$aBlack English$xSocial aspects$xResearch. 615 0$aAfrican Americans$xEducation$xResearch. 615 0$aLanguage and education 615 0$aSociolinguistics$xResearch. 615 0$aLanguage and education 615 0$aMultilingualism$xSocial aspects$xResearch. 676 $a306.44/608996 676 $a306.44608996 700 $aAnya$b Uju.$0982018 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910155037103321 996 $aRacialized identities in second language learning$92241189 997 $aUNINA
