In most African countries the labour force is growing faster than new jobs, leading to increased informalization of the economy. Case studies concentrate on Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi, where less than ten per cent of the labour force work in the formal sector, as compared with some twenty to forty per cent in the 1960s. Public sector workers have been reduced but there have not been enough jobs to compensate in the rest of the formal sector. The education and training institutions also have difficulties in providing skills for the restructured markets. 606 $aLabor market$zAfrica, Eastern 606 $aLabor market$zAfrica, Southern 606 $aLabor economics$zAfrica, Eastern 606 $aLabor economics$zAfrica, Southern 606 $aBusiness & Economics$2HILCC 606 $aLabor & Workers' Economics$2HILCC 607 $aAfrica, Eastern$xEconomic policy 607 $aAfrica, Southern$xEconomic policy 607 $aAfrica, Eastern$xEconomic conditions 607 $aAfrica, Southern$xEconomic conditions 615 0$aLabor market 615 0$aLabor market 615 0$aLabor economics 615 0$aLabor economics 615 7$aBusiness & Economics 615 7$aLabor & Workers' Economics 676 $a598.014 702 $aGeest$b Willem van der 702 $aHoeven$b Rolph van der 712 02$aInternational Labour Office, 801 0$bPQKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910170976703321 996 $aAdjustment, Employment and Missing Institutions in Africa: The Experience in Eastern and Southern Africa$92020978 997 $aUNINA
