It explores two intimately linked, yet analytically distinct themes: state building and national identity reconstruction following secession and collapse. In Somaliland and South Sudan, rearranging the state requires a complete metamorphosis of state institutions so that they respond to the needs and interests of the people. In Sudan and Somalia, the reconfiguration of the remains of the state must address a new reality and demands on the ground. All four cases examined, although highly variable, involve conflict. Conflict defines the scope, depth and momentum of the state building and state reconstruction process. It also determines the contours and parameters of the projects to reconstitute national identity and rebuild a nation. Addressing the contested identity formation and its direct relation to state building would therefore go a long way in mitigating conflicts and state crisis. 606 $aAfrica?Politics and government 606 $aComparative politics 606 $aPeace 606 $aEconomic development 606 $aDemocracy 606 $aAfrican Politics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911090 606 $aComparative Politics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911040 606 $aConflict Studies$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/912060 606 $aPeace Studies$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/912070 606 $aDevelopment Studies$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/913000 606 $aDemocracy$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911050 615 0$aAfrica?Politics and government. 615 0$aComparative politics. 615 0$aPeace. 615 0$aEconomic development. 615 0$aDemocracy. 615 14$aAfrican Politics. 615 24$aComparative Politics. 615 24$aConflict Studies. 615 24$aPeace Studies. 615 24$aDevelopment Studies. 615 24$aDemocracy. 676 $a320.96 702 $aBereketeab$b Redie$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910164153403321 996 $aState Building and National Identity Reconstruction in the Horn of Africa$92205580 997 $aUNINA
