He went to study medicine intending to practice until the age of forty and then retire to write poetry. Lung disease forced him to retire in 1882, and from that point on he devoted himself to writing and literary research. However, Bridges' literary work started long before his retirement, his first collection of poems having been published in 1873. He was appointed Poet Laureate in 1913 by George V, the only medical graduate to have held the office. He died in Oxford on the 21st of April 1930. 517 $aPoetry of Alexander Pope - Volume IX 606 $aEnglish poetry 615 0$aEnglish poetry. 676 $a821.5 700 $aPope$b Alexander$0167714 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910163302603321 996 $aThe Poetry of Alexander Pope - Volume IX$93010826 997 $aUNINA
