We find strong evidence that within-firm increases in patent stock are associated with increases in firm size, exports, and more interestingly, total factor productivity and new product revenue share. Event studies using first-time patentees as the treatment group and non-patenting firms selected based on Propensity-Score Matching method as the control group also demonstrate similar effects following initial patent application. We also find that although state-owned enterprises (SOEs) on average have lower level of productivity and are less innovative compared to their non-state-owned peers, increases in patent stock tend to be associated with higher productivity growth among SOEs, especially for patents with lower innovative content. The latter could reflect the preferential government policies enjoyed by SOEs. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2016/249 606 $aEconomic development$zChina 606 $aIndustrial productivity$zChina 606 $aInvestments: Stocks$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aProduction and Operations Management$2imf 606 $aEconomic Growth of Open Economies$2imf 606 $aIndustry Studies: Manufacturing: General$2imf 606 $aTechnological Change: Choices and Consequences$2imf 606 $aDiffusion Processes$2imf 606 $aInstitutions and Growth$2imf 606 $aEconomywide Country Studies: Asia including Middle East$2imf 606 $aSocialist Enterprises and Their Transitions$2imf 606 $aProduction$2imf 606 $aCost$2imf 606 $aCapital and Total Factor Productivity$2imf 606 $aCapacity$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics: Production$2imf 606 $aPension Funds$2imf 606 $aNon-bank Financial Institutions$2imf 606 $aFinancial Instruments$2imf 606 $aInstitutional Investors$2imf 606 $aEmployment$2imf 606 $aUnemployment$2imf 606 $aWages$2imf 606 $aIntergenerational Income Distribution$2imf 606 $aAggregate Human Capital$2imf 606 $aAggregate Labor Productivity$2imf 606 $aNonprofit Organizations and Public Enterprise: General$2imf 606 $aInvestment & securities$2imf 606 $aPublic ownership$2imf 606 $anationalization$2imf 606 $aTotal factor productivity$2imf 606 $aProductivity$2imf 606 $aStocks$2imf 606 $aCapital productivity$2imf 606 $aPublic enterprises$2imf 606 $aFinancial institutions$2imf 606 $aEconomic sectors$2imf 606 $aIndustrial productivity$2imf 606 $aGovernment business enterprises$2imf 607 $aChina, People's Republic of$2imf 615 0$aEconomic development 615 0$aIndustrial productivity 615 7$aInvestments: Stocks 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aProduction and Operations Management 615 7$aEconomic Growth of Open Economies 615 7$aIndustry Studies: Manufacturing: General 615 7$aTechnological Change: Choices and Consequences 615 7$aDiffusion Processes 615 7$aInstitutions and Growth 615 7$aEconomywide Country Studies: Asia including Middle East 615 7$aSocialist Enterprises and Their Transitions 615 7$aProduction 615 7$aCost 615 7$aCapital and Total Factor Productivity 615 7$aCapacity 615 7$aMacroeconomics: Production 615 7$aPension Funds 615 7$aNon-bank Financial Institutions 615 7$aFinancial Instruments 615 7$aInstitutional Investors 615 7$aEmployment 615 7$aUnemployment 615 7$aWages 615 7$aIntergenerational Income Distribution 615 7$aAggregate Human Capital 615 7$aAggregate Labor Productivity 615 7$aNonprofit Organizations and Public Enterprise: General 615 7$aInvestment & securities 615 7$aPublic ownership 615 7$anationalization 615 7$aTotal factor productivity 615 7$aProductivity 615 7$aStocks 615 7$aCapital productivity 615 7$aPublic enterprises 615 7$aFinancial institutions 615 7$aEconomic sectors 615 7$aIndustrial productivity 615 7$aGovernment business enterprises 676 $a338.951 700 $aHe$b Hui$01450561 701 $aLi$b Nan$01202682 701 $aFang$b Jing$01258107 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910162926203321 996 $aChina?s Rising IQ (Innovation Quotient) and Growth$93650001 997 $aUNINA
