This paper studies the effect of the aging of the workforce on labor productivity, identifies the main transmission channels, and examines what policies might mitigate the effects of aging. We find that workforce aging reduces growth in labor productivity, mainly through its negative effect on TFP growth. Projected workforce aging could reduce TFP growth by an average of 0.2 percentage points every year over the next two decades. A variety of policies could ameliorate this effect. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2016/238 606 $aAging$zEurope 606 $aLabor supply$zEurope 606 $aIndustrial productivity$zEurope 606 $aLabor$2imf 606 $aProduction and Operations Management$2imf 606 $aDemography$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics: Production$2imf 606 $aInnovation$2imf 606 $aResearch and Development$2imf 606 $aTechnological Change$2imf 606 $aIntellectual Property Rights: General$2imf 606 $aMeasurement of Economic Growth$2imf 606 $aAggregate Productivity$2imf 606 $aCross-Country Output Convergence$2imf 606 $aEconomics of the Elderly$2imf 606 $aEconomics of the Handicapped$2imf 606 $aNon-labor Market Discrimination$2imf 606 $aProduction$2imf 606 $aCost$2imf 606 $aCapital and Total Factor Productivity$2imf 606 $aCapacity$2imf 606 $aLabor Force and Employment, Size, and Structure$2imf 606 $aDemographic Economics: General$2imf 606 $aPopulation & demography$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aLabour$2imf 606 $aincome economics$2imf 606 $aAging$2imf 606 $aTotal factor productivity$2imf 606 $aLabor force$2imf 606 $aProductivity$2imf 606 $aPopulation and demographics$2imf 606 $aPopulation aging$2imf 606 $aIndustrial productivity$2imf 606 $aLabor market$2imf 606 $aPopulation$2imf 606 $aIncome economics$2imf 607 $aSpain$2imf 615 0$aAging 615 0$aLabor supply 615 0$aIndustrial productivity 615 7$aLabor 615 7$aProduction and Operations Management 615 7$aDemography 615 7$aMacroeconomics: Production 615 7$aInnovation 615 7$aResearch and Development 615 7$aTechnological Change 615 7$aIntellectual Property Rights: General 615 7$aMeasurement of Economic Growth 615 7$aAggregate Productivity 615 7$aCross-Country Output Convergence 615 7$aEconomics of the Elderly 615 7$aEconomics of the Handicapped 615 7$aNon-labor Market Discrimination 615 7$aProduction 615 7$aCost 615 7$aCapital and Total Factor Productivity 615 7$aCapacity 615 7$aLabor Force and Employment, Size, and Structure 615 7$aDemographic Economics: General 615 7$aPopulation & demography 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aLabour 615 7$aincome economics 615 7$aAging 615 7$aTotal factor productivity 615 7$aLabor force 615 7$aProductivity 615 7$aPopulation and demographics 615 7$aPopulation aging 615 7$aIndustrial productivity 615 7$aLabor market 615 7$aPopulation 615 7$aIncome economics 676 $a305.26094 700 $aAiyar$b Shekhar$01095044 701 $aEbeke$b Christian$01449652 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910162926003321 996 $aThe Impact of Workforce Aging on European Productivity$93648209 997 $aUNINA
