From Romashkov's Stenka Razin (1908), to Viskovsky's The Last Tango (1918), the female performer remains central. In this groundbreaking new study, Morley argues that early Russian film-makers used the character of the female performer to explore key contemporary concerns from changing conceptions of femininity and the emergence of the so-called New Woman, to broader questions concerning gender identity. Morley also reveals that the film-makers used this archetype of femininity to experiment and develop a unique cinematic language. 410 0$aKINO, the Russian and Soviet cinema series. 517 3 $aWoman as performer in early Russian cinema 606 $aMotion pictures and women$zRussia 606 $aMotion pictures$zRussia (Federation) 606 $aWomen in motion pictures 606 $2Films, cinema 615 0$aMotion pictures and women 615 0$aMotion pictures 615 0$aWomen in motion pictures. 676 $a791.430947 700 $aMorley$b Rachel$01212782 712 02$aBloomsbury (Firm), 801 0$bYDX 801 1$bCaBNVSL 801 2$bCaBNVSL 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910162791803321 996 $aPerforming femininity$92800705 997 $aUNINA
