Conclusion: Vital and Viable?. 330 $aThis book analyses the social and cultural status of high streets in the age of recession and austerity. High streets are shown to have long been regarded as the heart of many communities, but have declined to a state where boarded-up and vacant retail units are a familiar sight in many British cities. The book argues that the policies deemed necessary to revive the fortunes of high streets are often thinly-veiled attacks on the tastes and cultures of the working class. Policy-makers often promote boutiques, art galleries and upmarket cafés at the expense of some of the outlets frequented by less affluent populations, including betting shops, fast food takeaways, discount stores and bargain booze outlets. Highlighting the social and cultural roles that so-called 'dying' high streets continue to play in the lives of working class and disadvantaged populations, this book provides a powerful argument against retail gentrification, and a timely analysis of class conflict in austerity Britain. It will be of great interest to scholars of geography, social policy and cultural studies. 606 $aSociology, Urban 606 $aHuman geography 606 $aCulture 606 $aSports?Sociological aspects 606 $aSocial sciences?Philosophy 606 $aQuality of life 606 $aUrban Studies/Sociology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X22250 606 $aHuman Geography$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X26000 606 $aSociology of Culture$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X22100 606 $aSociology of Sport and Leisure$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X22220 606 $aSocial Theory$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X22140 606 $aQuality of Life Research$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X23000 607 $aGreat Britain$2fast 608 $aHistory.$2fast 615 0$aSociology, Urban. 615 0$aHuman geography. 615 0$aCulture. 615 0$aSports?Sociological aspects. 615 0$aSocial sciences?Philosophy. 615 0$aQuality of life. 615 14$aUrban Studies/Sociology. 615 24$aHuman Geography. 615 24$aSociology of Culture. 615 24$aSociology of Sport and Leisure. 615 24$aSocial Theory. 615 24$aQuality of Life Research. 676 $a307.76 700 $aHubbard$b Phil$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0307020 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910162663903321 996 $aThe Battle for the High Street$92523090 997 $aUNINA
