However, the inheritance is saddled with debts, and the brothers must decide whether or not to accept it. Eugene accepts the inheritance and buys off his brother's portion, thinking that he can sell off large tracts of land while making improvements to the rest. Living alone with his mother while working on the farm, Eugene misses the relations he had with women while living in St. Petersburg. He inquires around the village, and the watchman introduces Eugene to a local peasant named Stepanida whose husband lives away in the city. For several months Eugene and Stepanida have encounters, with Eugene paying her each time. Eventually, Eugene's mother thinks it is time for him to get married, preferably to an heiress who will help them with their debts. To her disappointment, Eugene falls in love with Liza Annenskaya, a charming middle-class girl, and they are married after Eugene breaks off relations with Stepanida. After a year of marriage, Liza employs two peasant women to help with cleaning the estate. One of them is Stepanida. When Eugene notices her, all the passion for her that he thought was forgotten comes rushing back. He can't stop thinking about her and decides that she must be sent away. Liza later suffers a harmful fall while pregnant, and Eugene takes her for a rest cure to the Crimea for two months on doctor's orders. She gives birth to a daughter, and Eugene's financial prospects are starting to look promising. His estate is described as being in the best working condition it has ever been, and he thinks he is finally happy. At a village festival, Eugene notices Stepanida dancing, and their glances re-awaken his desire. Tormented by lust, he thinks of resuming relations with her, but realizes that the affair would cause too much of a scandal. Eugene says of Stepanida, "Really, she is--a devil. Simply a devil. She has possessed herself of me against my own will." He convinces himself that there are only two options: to kill Stepanida, or to kill his wife and run off with Stepanida. Eugene then thinks of a third option, which is to commit suicide. When his family finds him dead of a revolver shot, they cannot understand why he killed himself since, although he was evidently tormented, he did not confide in his closest relatives. In the alternate version of the ending, Eugene kills Stepanida with a revolver, is imprisoned, and eventually returns home a useless drunkard.(Excerpt from Wikipedia) 410 0$aClassics to Go Series 606 $aInheritance and succession$7Generated by AI 606 $aImmorality$7Generated by AI 615 0$aInheritance and succession 615 0$aImmorality 676 $aFIC 700 $aTolstoy$b Leo$0629377 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910160792003321 996 $aThe Devil$94425881 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01773nam 22004933 450 001 9911049053803321 005 20251024080536.0 010 $a0-262-38472-8 010 $a0-262-38473-6 035 $a(CKB)41696277300041 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC31975417 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL31975417 035 $a(OCoLC)1534441968 035 $a(EXLCZ)9941696277300041 100 $a20251024d2025 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 13$aAn Engineered World $eThe Role of Engineers in Global Modernity 205 $a1st ed. 210 1$aCambridge :$cMIT Press,$d2025. 210 4$d©2025. 215 $a1 online resource (341 pages) 225 1 $aEngineering Studies 311 08$a0-262-55335-X 330 $aHow engineering as a modern profession emerged as a global phenomenon--and why its development and expansion are so critical to our understanding of twentieth-century world history. An Engineered World examines the dramatic and global expansion of modern, professional engineering between roughly 1870 and 1950. 410 0$aEngineering Studies 606 $aBUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Globalization$2bisacsh 606 $aSCIENCE / History$2bisacsh 606 $aTECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING / Engineering (General)$2bisacsh 615 7$aBUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Globalization 615 7$aSCIENCE / History 615 7$aTECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING / Engineering (General) 700 $aBeatty$b Edward$01887338 701 $aSolares$b Israel G$01887339 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9911049053803321 996 $aAn Engineered World$94523795 997 $aUNINA
