Even so, these 'realist' novels are profoundly imaginative. In this study, Ulka Anjaria challenges the distinction between early twentieth-century social realism and modern-day magical realism, arguing that realism in the colony functioned as a mode of experimentation and aesthetic innovation - not merely as mimesis of the 'real world'. By examining novels from the 1930s across several Indian languages, Anjaria reveals how Indian authors used realist techniques to imagine alternate worlds, to invent new subjectivities and relationships with the Indian nation and to question some of the most entrenched values of modernity. Addressing issues of colonialism, Indian nationalism, the rise of Gandhi, religion and politics, and the role of literature in society, Anjaria's careful analysis will complement graduate study and research in English literature, South Asian studies and postcolonial studies. 606 $aIndic fiction$y20th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aRealism in literature 615 0$aIndic fiction$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aRealism in literature. 676 $a891/.1 700 $aAnjaria$b Ulka$f1979-$01037726 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910452700703321 996 $aRealism in the twentieth-century Indian novel$92458861 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02644oas 2201093 a 450 001 9910160109403321 005 20260128110413.0 011 $a1466-4348 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB1481555-2 035 $a(OCoLC)40348082 035 $a(CONSER) 00238317 035 $a(CKB)954925271394 035 $a(DE-599)1481555-2 035 $a(EXLCZ)99954925271394 100 $a19981119a19879999 sy 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurmnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aCultural studies 210 $a[London] $cRoutledge 215 $a1 online resource (volumes) 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 311 08$a0950-2386 606 $aCulture$vPeriodicals 606 $aPopular culture$vPeriodicals 606 $aCulture populaire$vPe?riodiques 606 $aEthnic & Cultural Studies$2ebps 606 $aCulture$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00885059 606 $aPopular culture$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01071344 606 $aCulture$2rasuqam 606 $aCulture populaire$2rasuqam 606 $aE?tude culturelle$2rasuqam 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2lcgft 608 $aPe?riodique e?lectronique (Descripteur de forme)$2rasuqam 608 $aRessource Internet (Descripteur de forme)$2rasuqam 608 $aperiodicals.$2aat 608 $aPe?riodiques.$2rvmgf 615 0$aCulture 615 0$aPopular culture 615 6$aCulture populaire 615 7$aEthnic & Cultural Studies. 615 7$aCulture. 615 7$aPopular culture. 615 7$aCulture. 615 7$aCulture populaire. 615 7$aE?tude culturelle. 676 $a306 801 0$bF#A 801 1$bF#A 801 2$bIUL 801 2$bEYM 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bUQ1 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bHEBIS 801 2$bFIE 801 2$bAZU 801 2$bAU@ 801 2$bCNTRU 801 2$bJ9U 801 2$bUKMGB 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bTYFRS 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bWT2 801 2$bDLC 801 2$bOCLCA 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bWYU 801 2$bVT2 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bLDP 801 2$bCUI 801 2$bUBY 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCL 801 2$bW2U 801 2$bSFB 801 2$bCNMTR 801 2$bSRU 801 2$bOCLCQ 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910160109403321 996 $aCultural studies$9977252 997 $aUNINA
