Beginning with Jefferson's disastrous stint as wartime governor of Virginia during the American Revolution, and proceeding to his later experiences as a diplomat in France, Secretary of State, and U.S. Vice President, historian Francis Cogliano considers how these varied assignments shaped Jefferson's thinking about international relations. The author then addresses Jefferson's two terms as President-his goals, the means he employed to achieve them, and his final record as a statesman. Cogliano documents the evolution of Jefferson's attitudes toward the use of force and the disposition of state power. He argues that Jefferson, although idealistic in the ends he sought to achieve, was pragmatic in the means he employed. Contrary to received wisdom, Jefferson was comfortable using deadly force when he deemed it necessary and was consistent in his foreign policy ends-prioritizing defense of the American republic above all else. His failures as a statesman were, more often than not, the result of circumstances beyond his control, notably the weakness of the fledgling American republic in a world of warring empires. 410 0$aLewis Walpole Series in Eighteenth-Century Culture and History 606 $aBIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY / Presidents & Heads of State$2bisacsh 607 $aUnited States$xForeign relations$y1801-1809 608 $aElectronic books. 615 7$aBIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY / Presidents & Heads of State. 676 $a327.73009/034 700 $aCogliano$b Francis D.$0472036 702 $aShannon$b Sonia 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910464203003321 996 $aEmperor of liberty$92485467 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03137nam 2200409 450 001 9910158981403321 005 20210209224222.0 035 $a(CKB)3710000001009032 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC5682166 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL5682166 035 $a(OCoLC)953167911 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000001009032 100 $a20180518d2016 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aLaughing legends $ehow the Comic Strip club changed the face of comedy /$fJeffrey Gurian 210 1$aNew York :$cSkyhorse Publishing,$d[2016] 210 4$dİ2016 215 $a1 online resource (174 pages) 311 $a1-63220-202-6 311 $a1-5107-1079-5 327 $aIntro -- Title Page -- Copyright -- Contents -- Foreword by Richie Tienken -- Foreword By Jeffrey Gurian -- Introduction By Chris Rock -- Introduction to The Comic Strip -- Chapter One?The Older Kids -- Jerry Seinfeld -- Paul Reiser -- Larry Miller -- George Wallace -- Ray Romano -- Alan Colmes -- Paul Provenza -- Chris Rock -- Gilbert Gottfried -- Jackie Martling -- Susie Essman -- Tony D'Andrea -- Eddie Brill -- Rick Overton -- Wayne Federman -- D.
