This book examines how Mexican immigrants who have made these towns their homes have integrated legally, culturally, and institutionally. What accounts for the massive growth in the Mexican immigrant populations in these two small towns, and what does the future hold for them? Based on 260 surveys and 47 in-depth interviews, this study combines quantitative and qualitative research to explore the level and characteristics of immigrant incorporation in Beardstown and Monmouth. It assesses the advancement of immigrants in the immigration/ residency/citizenship process, the immigrants' level of cultural integration (via language, their connectedness with other members of society, and their relationships with neighbors), the degree and characteristics of discrimination against immigrants in these two towns, and the extent to which immigrants participate in different social and political activities and trust government institutions. Immigrants in new destinations are likely to be poorer, to be less educated, and to have weaker English-language skills than immigrants in traditional destinations. Studying how this population negotiates the obstacles to and opportunities for incorporation is crucial"--$cProvided by publisher. 410 0$aLatinos in the United States series. 606 $aPOLITICAL SCIENCE / Public Policy / Cultural Policy$2bisacsh 606 $aSOCIAL SCIENCE / Sociology / Rural$2bisacsh 606 $aSOCIAL SCIENCE / Ethnic Studies / Hispanic American Studies$2bisacsh 606 $aMonmouth (Ill.)$xEthnic relations 606 $aBeardstown (Ill.)$xEthnic relations 606 $aSocial surveys$zIllinois 606 $aImmigrants$zIllinois$vStatistics 606 $aImmigrants$zIllinois$xSocial conditions 606 $aMexican Americans$zIllinois$vInterviews 606 $aMexican Americans$zIllinois$vStatistics 606 $aMexican Americans$xCultural assimilation$zIllinois 607 $aIllinois$xRural conditions 607 $aIllinois$xEthnic relations 615 7$aPOLITICAL SCIENCE / Public Policy / Cultural Policy. 615 7$aSOCIAL SCIENCE / Sociology / Rural. 615 7$aSOCIAL SCIENCE / Ethnic Studies / Hispanic American Studies. 615 0$aMonmouth (Ill.)$xEthnic relations. 615 0$aBeardstown (Ill.)$xEthnic relations. 615 0$aSocial surveys 615 0$aImmigrants 615 0$aImmigrants$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aMexican Americans 615 0$aMexican Americans 615 0$aMexican Americans$xCultural assimilation 676 $a305.8968/720773 686 $aSOC044000$aSOC026020$aPOL038000$2bisacsh 700 $aAlbarraci?n$b Julia$01248575 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910158627203321 996 $aAt the Core and in the Margins$92893775 997 $aUNINA
