In this deftly written jewel of a novel, award-winning author Jim Nichols strings together the bittersweet stories of people bound together by shared geography and the insular nature of small-town life. There's Johnny Lunden, a well-meaning war veteran with a penchant for the local bar and a deep, but doomed love for his family; eight-year-old Ted Soule, who shares a first kiss with the Ophelia-like Nadia, the daughter of his Russian neighbors; and Tomi Lambert who watches the confused adults around her struggle to accept their fates. With the coastal waters of Maine serving as a backdrop, Nichols artfully explores the nature of connection--hoped for, missed, lost, and found. 610 $aMaine 610 $aFiction 676 $a813/.6 700 $aNichols$b Jim$f1944-$01433380 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910157793603321 996 $aCloser All the Time$93580816 997 $aUNINA LEADER 05707nam 22007693 450 001 9910557421603321 005 20250506080452.0 035 $a(CKB)5400000000043478 035 $a(oapen)https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/76269 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC31982628 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL31982628 035 $a(oapen)doab76269 035 $a(EXLCZ)995400000000043478 100 $a20250506d2021 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurmn|---annan 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aTransitioning to Sustainable Life on Land 205 $a1st ed. 210 $aBasel, Switzerland$cMDPI - Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute$d2021 210 1$aBasel :$cMDPI AG,$d2021. 210 4$dİ2021. 215 $a1 electronic resource (478 p.) 225 1 $aTransitioning to Sustainability Series 311 08$a3-03897-878-7 311 08$a3-03897-879-5 327 $aIntro -- Series: Volume 15 -- Contents -- About the Editor -- Contributors -- Abstracts -- Transitioning to Sustainable Life on Land-Introduction to SDG 15 and the Volume -- Part 1: Goals, Trade-Offs, Values, and Ethics -- Biodiversity and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals -- Integrating Environmental Value Systems: A Proposal for Synthesis -- Can Justice Respect Needs and Nature? Among others, it requires societies to sustainably manage forests, halt and reverse land degradation, combat desertification, and halt biodiversity loss. Despite the fact that protection of terrestrial ecosystems is on the rise worldwide and forest loss has slowed, the recent IPBES report concluded that ?nature is declining globally at rates unprecedented in human history?. Consequently, the United Nations General Assembly recently declared 2021?2030 the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. There is no doubt that the current global responses are far from sufficient and significant transformative changes of societies are needed to restore and protect nature and ecosystems. Transitioning to Sustainable Life on Land presents reviews, original research, and practical experiences from different disciplines with a focus on: theoretical and empirical reflection about the necessary transformation of values, institutions, markets, firms and policies, reviews and research on protection, restoration and sustainable use of diverse terrestrial ecosystems, analyses and reporting of encouraging local, regional, national, and global initiatives. Transitioning to Sustainable Life on Land is part of MDPI's new Open Access book series Transitioning to Sustainability. With this series, MDPI pursues environmentally and socially relevant research which contributes to efforts toward a sustainable world. Transitioning to Sustainability aims to add to the conversation about regional and global sustainable development according to the 17 SDGs. Set to be published in 2020/2021, the book series is intended to reach beyond disciplinary, even academic boundaries. 410 0$aTransitioning to Sustainability Series 606 $aResearch & information: general$2bicssc 606 $aBiology, life sciences$2bicssc 606 $aTechnology, engineering, agriculture$2bicssc 610 $abiodiversity 610 $aeconomics and governance 610 $avaluation and ethics 610 $ajustice and sufficiency 610 $azero net loss 610 $acultivated landscapes 610 $aecosystem restoration 610 $aconservation agriculture 610 $aagroforestry 610 $apeatland 610 $aland consolidation 610 $aland tenure 610 $aland ownership 615 7$aResearch & information: general 615 7$aBiology, life sciences 615 7$aTechnology, engineering, agriculture 700 $aBeckmann$b Volker$01325370 701 $aTisdell$b Clement$0638584 701 $aOtt$b Konrad$01289811 701 $aReinmuth$b Karl Christoph$01787596 701 $aZiegler$b Rafael$01817411 701 $aHampicke$b Ulrich$01817412 701 $aZerbe$b Stefan$01245868 701 $aThevs$b Niels$01817413 701 $aEwert$b Stefan$01817414 701 $aAbel$b Susanne$01817415 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910557421603321 996 $aTransitioning to Sustainable Life on Land$94375182 997 $aUNINA
