The cooks who spent countless hours cooking and processing food are overlooked and the forgotten players in the daily lives of our ancestors. The Menial Art of Cooking shows how cooking activities provide a window into other aspects of society and, as such, should be taken seriously as an aspect of social, cultural, political, and economic life. This book examines techniques and technologies of food preparation, the spaces where food was cooked, the relationship between cooking and changes in suprahousehold economies, the religious and symbolic aspects of cooking, the relationship between cooking and social identity, and how examining foodways provides insight into social relations of production, distribution, and consumption. Contributors use a wide variety of evidence-including archaeological data; archival research; analysis of ceramics, fauna, botany, glass artifacts, stone tools, murals, and painted ceramics; ethnographic analogy; and the distribution of artifacts across space-to identify signs of cooking and food processing left by ancient cooks. The Menial Art of Cooking is the first archaeological volume focused on cooking and food preparation in prehistoric and historic settings around the world and will interest archaeologists, social anthropologists, sociologists, and other scholars studying cooking and food preparation or subsistence. 606 $aArchaeology and history 606 $aCooking$xHistory 606 $aCooking$xSocial aspects$xHistory 606 $aCooks$xHistory 606 $aCookware$xHistory 606 $aEthnoarchaeology 606 $aFood habits$xHistory 606 $aSocial archaeology 615 0$aArchaeology and history. 615 0$aCooking$xHistory. 615 0$aCooking$xSocial aspects$xHistory. 615 0$aCooks$xHistory. 615 0$aCookware$xHistory. 615 0$aEthnoarchaeology. 615 0$aFood habits$xHistory. 615 0$aSocial archaeology. 676 $a641.509 701 $aGraff$b Sarah R$01801629 701 $aRodriguez-Alegria$b Enrique$01801630 712 02$aSociety for American Archaeology.$bMeeting$f(2005) 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910957071603321 996 $aThe menial art of cooking$94346985 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02702nam 2200685 a 450 001 9910157694103321 005 20250704115942.0 010 $a9789587411447 010 $a9587411447 035 $a(CKB)2670000000184844 035 $a(OCoLC)847722162 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebrary10552466 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000765516 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11473192 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000765516 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10782688 035 $a(PQKB)10870924 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3197952 035 $a(WaSeSS)Ind00033507 035 $a(OCoLC)929342906 035 $a(FlNmELB)ELB69839 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)musev2_125523 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC31773812 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL31773812 035 $a(Perlego)1872606 035 $a(NyNyDIG)DIGUNINOR0009 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000184844 100 $a20201205e2011 || | 101 0 $aspa 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aEpifania y etiologia $eensayos sobre mito y religiosidad griega antigua /$fYidi Paez Casadiegos 205 $a1st ed. 210 $aBarranquilla $cEditorial Universidad del Norte$d2011 215 $a1 online resource (216 p.) 300 $aBibliographic Level Mode of Issuance: Monograph 311 08$a9789587411263 311 08$a9587411269 330 8 $aA trave?s de ensayos que se ocupan de cuatro mitos griegos, el autor, en rigurosa pesquisa que consulta fuentes de la arqueologi?a, la historia, la filologi?a cla?sica y la filosofi?a, establece relaciones vinculantes entre los cultos miste?ricos y las necesidades y demandas utilitarias de la democracia ateniense.
