A Vietnamese Moses is the story of Philiphê Binh, a Vietnamese Catholic priest who in 1796 traveled from Tonkin to the Portuguese court in Lisbon to persuade its ruler to appoint a bishop for his community of ex-Jesuits. Based on Binh's surviving writings from his thirty-seven-year exile in Portugal, this book examines how the intersections of global and local Roman Catholic geographies shaped the lives of Vietnamese Christians in the early modern era. The book also argues that Binh's mission to Portugal and his intense lobbying on behalf of his community reflected the agency of Vietnamese Catholics, who vigorously engaged with church politics in defense of their distinctive Portuguese-Catholic heritage. George E. Dutton demonstrates the ways in which Catholic beliefs, histories, and genealogies transformed how Vietnamese thought about themselves and their place in the world. This sophisticated exploration of Vietnamese engagement with both the Catholic Church and Napoleonic Europe provides a unique perspective on the complex history of early Vietnamese Christianity. 606 $aCatholics$zVietnam$vBiography 607 $aVietnam$xChurch history$y19th century 607 $aVietnam$xChurch history$y18th century 610 $aasia. 610 $abelief. 610 $acatholic. 610 $acatholicism. 610 $achristian faith. 610 $achristian living. 610 $achristian. 610 $achristianity in asia. 610 $achristianity in vietnam. 610 $achristianity. 610 $aconversion. 610 $aconvert. 610 $aeastern world. 610 $afaith. 610 $ageography. 610 $amissionary work. 610 $areligion in asia. 610 $areligion. 610 $areligious studies. 610 $avietnam. 610 $avietnamese catholics. 610 $avietnamese christians. 610 $awestern religion. 615 0$aCatholics 676 $a282.092 676 $aB 700 $aDutton$b George Edson$01025925 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910156518603321 996 $aA Vietnamese Moses$92440095 997 $aUNINA
