This process aims primarily at defending the self-conscious subject against the threat of its metaphysical inconsistence. In other words, the self is essentially a repertoire of psychological manoeuvres whose outcome is self-representation aimed at coping with the fundamental fragility of the human subject. This picture of the self differs from both the idealist and the eliminative approaches widely represented in contemporary discussion. Against the idealist approach, this book contends that rather than the self being primitive and logically prior, it is the result of a process of construction that originates in subpersonal unconscious processes. On the other hand, it also rejects the anti-realistic, eliminative argument that, from the non-primary, derivative nature of the self, infers its status as an illusory by-product of real neurobiological events, devoid of any explanatory role. 606 $aPhilosophy of mind 606 $aCognitive psychology 606 $aPsychoanalysis 606 $aSelf 606 $aIdentity (Psychology) 606 $aPhilosophy of Mind$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/E31000 606 $aCognitive Psychology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/Y20060 606 $aPsychoanalysis$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/H54026 606 $aSelf and Identity$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/Y20150 615 0$aPhilosophy of mind. 615 0$aCognitive psychology. 615 0$aPsychoanalysis. 615 0$aSelf. 615 0$aIdentity (Psychology). 615 14$aPhilosophy of Mind. 615 24$aCognitive Psychology. 615 24$aPsychoanalysis. 615 24$aSelf and Identity. 676 $a128.2 700 $aMarraffa$b Massimo$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0281167 702 $aDi Francesco$b Michele$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 702 $aPaternoster$b Alfredo$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910154815603321 996 $aThe Self and its Defenses$92545695 997 $aUNINA
