"The Mountains and the City" is a rare discussion in English of the history of a region of Europe, a genre common in other countries but undeveloped in Britain. The book deals with two mountain valleys in Tuscany from the eight to the twelfth century, with some examination of their future progress into the sixteenth. It charts their internal social and economic development and their links with the emerging world of the Italian city states. The importance of the book is in its stress on the small-scale society of the mountains; on the relation of local society to its geographical environment; and, above all, in its concern to see society from below, through the activities of local people, rather than through the interests of their masters. In its focus on local interaction, this is one of the few anthropological studies of medieval history that has yet been written. 410 0$aACLS Humanities E-Book. 517 $aMountains and the City 531 $aMOUNTAINS AND THE CITY, THE 531 $aMOUNTAINS AND THE CITY: THE TUSCAN APPENNINES IN THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES 531 $aTHE MOUNTAINS AND THE CITY 531 $aTHE MOUNTAINS & THE CITY: THE TUSCAN APPENNINES IN THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES 606 $aCastelnuovo di Garfagnana (Italy)$xSocial conditions 606 $aCastelnuovo di Garfagnana (Italy)$xEconomic conditions 606 $aRegions & Countries - Europe$2HILCC 606 $aHistory & Archaeology$2HILCC 606 $aItaly$2HILCC 607 $aCastelnuovo di Garfagnana (Italy)$xHistory 607 $aCasentino Valley (Italy)$xHistory 607 $aCasentino Valley (Italy)$xSocial conditions 607 $aCasentino Valley (Italy)$xEconomic conditions 615 0$aCastelnuovo di Garfagnana (Italy)$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aCastelnuovo di Garfagnana (Italy)$xEconomic conditions. 615 7$aRegions & Countries - Europe 615 7$aHistory & Archaeology 615 7$aItaly 676 $a945/.53 700 $aWickham$b Chris$f1950-$0155127 712 02$aAmerican Council of Learned Societies. 801 0$bMiU 801 1$bMiU 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996247922903316 996 $aThe mountains and the city$93011331 997 $aUNISA LEADER 08491nam 22017775 450 001 9910154754003321 005 20240715181659.0 010 $a1-4008-8164-1 024 7 $a10.1515/9781400881642 035 $a(CKB)3710000000620065 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001651263 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)16426354 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001651263 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)13593395 035 $a(PQKB)10212974 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4738545 035 $a(DE-B1597)468029 035 $a(OCoLC)979746991 035 $a(OCoLC)990656194 035 $a(DE-B1597)9781400881642 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000620065 100 $a20190708d2016 fg 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aDiscontinuous Groups and Riemann Surfaces (AM-79), Volume 79 $eProceedings of the 1973 Conference at the University of Maryland. The papers, by leading authorities, deal mainly with Fuchsian and Kleinian groups, Teichmüller spaces, Jacobian varieties, and quasiconformal mappings. These topics are intertwined, representing a common meeting of algebra, geometry, and analysis. 410 0$aAnnals of mathematics studies ;$vNumber 79. 606 $aRiemann surfaces$vCongresses 606 $aDiscontinuous groups$vCongresses 610 $aAbelian variety. 610 $aAdjunction (field theory). 610 $aAffine space. 610 $aAlgebraic curve. 610 $aAlgebraic structure. 610 $aAnalytic function. 610 $aArithmetic genus. 610 $aAutomorphism. 610 $aBernhard Riemann. 610 $aBoundary (topology). 610 $aCauchy sequence. 610 $aCauchy?Schwarz inequality. 610 $aCayley?Hamilton theorem. 610 $aClosed geodesic. 610 $aCombination. 610 $aCommutative diagram. 610 $aCommutator subgroup. 610 $aCompact Riemann surface. 610 $aComplex dimension. 610 $aComplex manifold. 610 $aComplex multiplication. 610 $aComplex space. 610 $aComplex torus. 610 $aCongruence subgroup. 610 $aConjugacy class. 610 $aConvex set. 610 $aCyclic group. 610 $aDegeneracy (mathematics). 610 $aDiagram (category theory). 610 $aDiffeomorphism. 610 $aDifferential form. 610 $aDimension (vector space). 610 $aDisjoint sets. 610 $aE7 (mathematics). 610 $aEndomorphism. 610 $aEquation. 610 $aEquivalence class. 610 $aEuclidean space. 610 $aExistence theorem. 610 $aExistential quantification. 610 $aFinite group. 610 $aFinitely generated group. 610 $aFuchsian group. 610 $aFundamental domain. 610 $aFundamental lemma (Langlands program). 610 $aFundamental polygon. 610 $aGalois extension. 610 $aHolomorphic function. 610 $aHomeomorphism. 610 $aHomology (mathematics). 610 $aHomomorphism. 610 $aHurwitz's theorem (number theory). 610 $aInclusion map. 610 $aInequality (mathematics). 610 $aInner automorphism. 610 $aIntersection (set theory). 610 $aIrreducibility (mathematics). 610 $aIsomorphism class. 610 $aIsomorphism theorem. 610 $aJacobian variety. 610 $aJordan curve theorem. 610 $aKleinian group. 610 $aLimit point. 610 $aMapping class group. 610 $aMetric space. 610 $aMonodromy. 610 $aMonomorphism. 610 $aMöbius transformation. 610 $aNon-Euclidean geometry. 610 $aOrthogonal trajectory. 610 $aPermutation. 610 $aPolynomial. 610 $aPower series. 610 $aProjective variety. 610 $aQuadratic differential. 610 $aQuadric. 610 $aQuasi-projective variety. 610 $aQuasiconformal mapping. 610 $aQuotient space (topology). 610 $aRectangle. 610 $aRiemann mapping theorem. 610 $aRiemann surface. 610 $aSchwarzian derivative. 610 $aSimply connected space. 610 $aSimultaneous equations. 610 $aSpecial case. 610 $aSubgroup. 610 $aSubsequence. 610 $aSurjective function. 610 $aSymmetric space. 610 $aTangent space. 610 $aTeichmüller space. 610 $aTheorem. 610 $aTopological space. 610 $aTopology. 610 $aUniqueness theorem. 610 $aUnit disk. 610 $aVariable (mathematics). 610 $aWinding number. 610 $aWord problem (mathematics). 615 0$aRiemann surfaces 615 0$aDiscontinuous groups 676 $a512/.2 702 $aGreenberg$b Leon 712 12$aConference on Discontinuous Groups and Riemann Surfaces 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910154754003321 996 $aDiscontinuous Groups and Riemann Surfaces (AM-79), Volume 79$92786238 997 $aUNINA
