The most primitive of these--the TOP manifolds--remained rather mysterious until 1968, when Kirby discovered his now famous torus unfurling device. A period of rapid progress with TOP manifolds ensued, including, in 1969, Siebenmann's refutation of the Hauptvermutung and the Triangulation Conjecture. Here is the first connected account of Kirby's and Siebenmann's basic research in this area.The five sections of this book are introduced by three articles by the authors that initially appeared between 1968 and 1970. Appendices provide a full discussion of the classification of homotopy tori, including Casson's unpublished work and a consideration of periodicity in topological surgery. 410 0$aAnnals of mathematics studies ;$vNumber 88. 606 $aManifolds (Mathematics) 606 $aPiecewise linear topology 606 $aTriangulating manifolds 610 $aAffine space. 610 $aAlgebraic topology (object). 610 $aApproximation. 610 $aAssociative property. 610 $aAutomorphism. 610 $aBig O notation. 610 $aCW complex. 610 $aCalculation. 610 $aCap product. 610 $aCartesian product. 610 $aCategory of sets. 610 $aChain complex. 610 $aClassification theorem. 610 $aClassifying space. 610 $aCobordism. 610 $aCodimension. 610 $aCofibration. 610 $aCohomology. 610 $aConnected space. 610 $aContinuous function (set theory). 610 $aContinuous function. 610 $aCounterexample. 610 $aDiffeomorphism. 610 $aDifferentiable manifold. 610 $aDifferential structure. 610 $aDifferential topology. 610 $aDimension (vector space). 610 $aDirect proof. 610 $aDisjoint union. 610 $aElementary proof. 610 $aEmbedding. 610 $aEuclidean space. 610 $aExistence theorem. 610 $aExistential quantification. 610 $aFiber bundle. 610 $aFibration. 610 $aGeneral position. 610 $aGeometry. 610 $aGroup homomorphism. 610 $aH-cobordism. 610 $aH-space. 610 $aHandle decomposition. 610 $aHandlebody. 610 $aHauptvermutung. 610 $aHausdorff space. 610 $aHilbert cube. 610 $aHomeomorphism group. 610 $aHomeomorphism. 610 $aHomomorphism. 610 $aHomotopy group. 610 $aHomotopy. 610 $aInclusion map. 610 $aInjective function. 610 $aInvertible matrix. 610 $aK-cell (mathematics). 610 $aKan extension. 610 $aLinear subspace. 610 $aLinear topology. 610 $aManifold. 610 $aMapping cylinder. 610 $aMathematical induction. 610 $aMathematician. 610 $aMetric space. 610 $aMorse theory. 610 $aNeighbourhood (mathematics). 610 $aOpen set. 610 $aPartition of unity. 610 $aPiecewise linear manifold. 610 $aPiecewise linear. 610 $aPoincaré conjecture. 610 $aPolyhedron. 610 $aPrincipal bundle. 610 $aProduct metric. 610 $aPushout (category theory). 610 $aRegular homotopy. 610 $aRetract. 610 $aSheaf (mathematics). 610 $aSimplicial complex. 610 $aSmoothing. 610 $aSpin structure. 610 $aStability theory. 610 $aStable manifold. 610 $aStandard map. 610 $aSubmanifold. 610 $aSubmersion (mathematics). 610 $aSubset. 610 $aSurgery exact sequence. 610 $aSurjective function. 610 $aTheorem. 610 $aTopological group. 610 $aTopological manifold. 610 $aTopological space. 610 $aTopology. 610 $aTransversal (geometry). 610 $aTransversality (mathematics). 610 $aTransversality theorem. 610 $aUnion (set theory). 610 $aUniqueness theorem. 610 $aVector bundle. 610 $aZorn's lemma. 615 0$aManifolds (Mathematics) 615 0$aPiecewise linear topology. 615 0$aTriangulating manifolds. 676 $a514/.7 686 $aSI 830$2rvk 700 $aKirby$b Robion C., $0441130 702 $aSiebenmann$b Laurence C., 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910154753803321 996 $aFoundational Essays on Topological Manifolds, Smoothings, and Triangulations.
