Literature may be described as the structured use of language: the modern linguistic analyzes language in a search for the minimal units of sound and form, phoneme and morpheme, and determines the combinations by which they can communicate meaning. The author here searches for a minimal structural unit in the literary narrative analogous to the phoneme and the morpheme in language structure. Based on a detailed analysis of the Roland and the Cid and twelve additional Romance narratives, Professor Dorfman's argument is that the structure of the medieval Romance epics may be analyzed into functional units which he calls "narremes." He divides a narrative into two types of structure: the superstructure and the substructure. A narrative, by definition, is a series of incidents. All the incidents in the narrative, taken as written, form the superstructure. Analysis, however, shows that many of the incidents may be abstracted from the narrative without deflecting the story-line. On the other hand, other incidents reveal themselves as organically linked with each other, so they cannot be omitted, without destroying the story-line. These selected incidents are the narremes, which make up the substructure of the narrative. This method of analysis produces so interesting and surprising results, results which make an important advance in research in linguistics and Romance literature. Eugene Dorfman, as an orthodox structuralist, has focused strictly on the formal descriptions of the narratives; but his analysis leads into the great traditional problems of literary history, and in particular poses anew the problem of the origins of the epic. 410 0$aUniversity of Toronto romance series. 606 $aPoetry, Medieval$xHistory and criticism 606 $aEpic poetry, Romance-language$xHistory and criticism 606 $aNarration (Rhetoric)$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aRhetoric, Medieval 615 0$aPoetry, Medieval$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aEpic poetry, Romance-language$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aNarration (Rhetoric)$xHistory 615 0$aRhetoric, Medieval. 676 $a809.1/02 700 $aDorfman$b Eugene$0197975 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910149435103321 996 $aThe Narreme in the Medieval Romance Epic$92167739 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01596nam 2200421 450 001 9910810496203321 005 20231110224044.0 010 $a1-78719-799-9 035 $a(CKB)5120000000140461 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC5399401 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL5399401 035 $a(OCoLC)1041526358 035 $a(EXLCZ)995120000000140461 100 $a20220703d2018 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$a3 steps to success $enegotiations /$fAnthony Jacks 210 1$a[Place of publication not identified] :$c[Legend Press],$d[2018] 215 $a1 online resource (9 pages) 225 1 $a3 Steps to Success 327 $aCover -- Title -- Introduction -- Step One: Getting to grips with the core approaches -- Step Two: Trading and Making it Work -- Step Three: The Fine Print. 330 $aThe guide is a summary of the Anthony Jacks' full Negotiations book, which offers all you need to know to get the most out of negotiations whether with existing and new clients or negotiating one-off or long term projects.
