Sellars stood in the forefront of a recoil within analytic philosophy from the foundationalist assumptions of contemporary empiricists. From Empiricism to Expressivism is a far-reaching reinterpretation of Sellars from one of the philosopher?s most brilliant intellectual heirs. Unifying and extending Sellars?s most important ideas, Robert Brandom constructs a theory of pragmatic expressivism which, in contrast to empiricism, understands meaning and knowledge in terms of the role expressions play in social practices. The key lies in Sellars?s radical reworking of Kant?s idea of the categories: the idea that the expressive job characteristic of many of the most important philosophical concepts is not to describe or explain the empirical world but rather to make explicit essential features of the conceptual framework that makes description and explanation possible. Brandom reconciles otherwise disparate elements of Sellars?s system, revealing a greater level of coherence and consistency in the philosopher?s arguments against empiricism than has usually been acknowledged. From Empiricism to Expressivism clarifies what Sellars had in mind when he talked about moving analytic philosophy from its Humean to its Kantian phase, and why such a move might be of crucial importance today. 606 $aEmpiricism 606 $aPragmatism 606 $aExpressivism (Ethics) 615 0$aEmpiricism. 615 0$aPragmatism. 615 0$aExpressivism (Ethics) 676 $a170/.42 700 $aBrandom$b Robert B. , $4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0290626 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996234841303316 996 $aFrom Empiricism to Expressivism$92310327 997 $aUNISA LEADER 01995oas 2200697 a 450 001 9910147333403321 005 20250922213015.0 011 $a2199-6067 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2437738-7 035 $a(OCoLC)263871803 035 $a(CONSER) 2008223119 035 $a(CKB)1000000000526898 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000526898 100 $a20081028a19809999 sy a 101 0 $aslv 135 $aurmn||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aAcrocephalus 210 1$aLjubljana :$cDrus?tvo za opazovanje in prouc?evanje ptic Slovenije 210 31$aWarsaw, Poland :$cDe Gruyter Open 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 300 $a"Glasilo drus?tva za opazovanje in prouc?evanje ptic Slovenije"--PDF masthead. 300 $aSome issues combined. 311 08$a0351-2851 606 $aBirds$zSlovenia$vPeriodicals 606 $aBird watching$zSlovenia$vPeriodicals 606 $aOiseaux$zSlove?nie$vPe?riodiques 606 $aOiseaux$xObservation$zSlove?nie$vPe?riodiques 606 $aBird watching$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00832948 606 $aBirds$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00832970 607 $aSlovenia$2fast$1https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJm4PB4qggMDvbW3fqhvHC 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 615 0$aBirds 615 0$aBird watching 615 6$aOiseaux 615 6$aOiseaux$xObservation 615 7$aBird watching. 615 7$aBirds. 712 02$aDrus?tvo za opazovanje in prouc?evanje ptic Slovenije. 801 0$bCLU 801 1$bCLU 801 2$bOCLCA 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCA 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bDLC 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bDLC 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCA 801 2$bAU@ 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bUEJ 801 2$bOCLCL 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910147333403321 996 $aAcrocephalus$92162958 997 $aUNINA
