Today Carlisle, Pennsylvania, nestled in the Susquehanna Valley, is far from the nation's political and financial centers. In the eighteenth century, however, Carlisle and its residents stood not only at a geographical crossroads but also at the fulcrum of early American controversies. Located between East Coast settlement and the western frontier, Carlisle quickly became a mid-Atlantic hub, serving as a migration gateway to the southern and western interiors, a commercial way station in the colonial fur trade, a military staging and supply ground during the Seven Years' War, American Revolution, and Whiskey Rebellion, and home to one of the first colleges in the United States, Dickinson. A Town In-Between reconsiders the role early American towns and townspeople played in the development of the country's interior. Focusing on the lives of the ambitious group of Scots-Irish colonists who built Carlisle, Judith Ridner reasserts that the early American west was won by traders, merchants, artisans, and laborers-many of them Irish immigrants-and not just farmers. Founded by proprietor Thomas Penn, the rapidly growing town was the site of repeated uprisings, jailbreaks, and one of the most publicized Anti-Federalist riots during constitutional ratification. These conflicts had dramatic consequences for many Scots-Irish Presbyterian residents who found themselves a people in-between, mediating among the competing ethnoreligious, cultural, class, and political interests that separated them from their fellow Quaker and Anglican colonists of the Delaware Valley and their myriad Native American trading partners of the Ohio country. In this thoroughly researched and highly readable study, Ridner argues that interior towns were not so much spearheads of a progressive and westward-moving Euro-American civilization, but volatile places situated in the middle of a culturally diverse, economically dynamic, and politically evolving early America. 410 0$aEarly American studies. 607 $aCarlisle (Pa.)$xHistory$y18th century 607 $aCarlisle (Pa.)$xHistory 608 $aElectronic books. 676 $a974.8/43 700 $aRidner$b Judith A$0967814 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910464145303321 996 $aA town in-between$92465216 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02081nas 2200577-a 450 001 9910146947803321 005 20230222213018.0 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2183342-4 035 $a(OCoLC)59108578 035 $a(CKB)1000000000022940 035 $a(CONSER)--2005264501 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000022940 100 $a20050418a20049999 --- a 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 04$aThe journal of community informatics 210 $aNew York, N.Y. $cCommunity Informatics Research Network$d2004- 210 3 $a[Waterloo, Ontario] $c[University of Waterloo Library] 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 300 $aTitle from PDF title page (viewed Apr. 18, 2005). 300 $aSome issues have a distinctive title. 311 $a1712-4441 517 3 $aCI 517 1 $aJoCI 531 $aJOURNAL OF COMMUNITY INFORMATICS 606 $aCommunity information services$vPeriodicals 606 $aInformation technology$xSocial aspects$vPeriodicals 606 $aServices d'information communautaires$vPériodiques 606 $aTechnologie de l'information$xAspect social$vPériodiques 606 $aCommunity information services$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00871014 606 $aInformation technology$xSocial aspects$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00973131 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 610 $aSocial Change 615 0$aCommunity information services 615 0$aInformation technology$xSocial aspects 615 6$aServices d'information communautaires 615 6$aTechnologie de l'information$xAspect social 615 7$aCommunity information services. 615 7$aInformation technology$xSocial aspects. 676 $a302.23 686 $acollissn$2lacc 686 $acci1icc$2lacc 712 02$aCommunity Informatics Research Network. 712 02$aUniversity of Waterloo.$bLibrary. 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910146947803321 996 $aThe journal of community informatics$92115655 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01114nam 2200325 450 001 9910280914203321 005 20230814223057.0 010 $a1-5386-4669-2 035 $a(CKB)4100000005061479 035 $a(WaSeSS)IndRDA00122533 035 $a(EXLCZ)994100000005061479 100 $a20200505d2018 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$ai-MITEL $e2018 Innovative Materials and Technologies in Electrical Engineering : Sulecin, Poland, 18-20 April 2018 /$fInstitute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 210 1$aPiscataway, New Jersey :$cInstitute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers,$d2018. 215 $a1 online resource (460 pages) 311 $a1-5386-4670-6 606 $aElectrical engineering$xTechnological innovations$vCongresses 615 0$aElectrical engineering$xTechnological innovations 676 $a621.3 801 0$bWaSeSS 801 1$bWaSeSS 906 $aPROCEEDING 912 $a9910280914203321 996 $aI-MITEL$92526904 997 $aUNINA
