This wave of massive immigration has led to a nationwide struggle with the need to become bicultural, a difficult and sometimes painful process of navigating between ethnic cultures. While some Latino adolescents become alienated and turn to antisocial behavior and substance use, others go on to excel in school, have successful careers, and build healthy families. Drawing on both quantitative and qualitative data ranging from surveys to extensive interviews with immigrant families, Becoming Bicultural explores the individual psychology, family dynamics, and societal messages behind bicultural development and sheds light on the factors that lead to positive or negative consequences for immigrant youth. Paul R. Smokowski and Martica Bacallao illuminate how immigrant families, and American communities in general, become bicultural and use their bicultural skills to succeed in their new surroundings The volume concludes by offering a model for intervention with immigrant teens and their families which enhances their bicultural skills. 606 $aAssimilation (Sociology)$zUnited States 606 $aHispanic Americans 606 $aMinority youth$zUnited States 606 $aBiculturalism$zUnited States 610 $aBecoming. 610 $aDrawing. 610 $abehind. 610 $abicultural. 610 $aboth. 610 $aconsequences. 610 $adata. 610 $adevelopment. 610 $adynamics. 610 $aexplores. 610 $afactors. 610 $afamily. 610 $aimmigrant. 610 $aindividual. 610 $alead. 610 $alight. 610 $amessages. 610 $anegative. 610 $apositive. 610 $apsychology. 610 $aqualitative. 610 $aquantitative. 610 $asheds. 610 $asocietal. 610 $athat. 610 $ayouth. 615 0$aAssimilation (Sociology) 615 0$aHispanic Americans. 615 0$aMinority youth 615 0$aBiculturalism 676 $a305.800973 700 $aSmokowski$b Paul R.$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01040173 702 $aBacallao$b Martica$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910791650303321 996 $aBecoming Bicultural$93748076 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03239oas 2201273 a 450 001 9910146357203321 005 20260218113017.0 011 $a1616-1599 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2022265-8 035 $a(OCoLC)43365189 035 $a(CONSER) 00227353 035 $a(CKB)954925486754 035 $a(DE-599)2022265-8 035 $a(EXLCZ)99954925486754 100 $a20000128a19799999 sy 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurmnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aMarine ecology progress series 210 $a[Oldendorf/Luhe, Germany] $cInter-Research 215 $a1 online resource 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 311 1 $a0171-8630 330 8 $aContains tables of contents and abstracts only, <1995>-2000; full text also available, vol. 201 (2000)- 517 1 $aMEPS 606 $aMarine ecology$vPeriodicals 606 $aBiology 606 $aEcology 606 $aEnvironmental health 606 $aMarine biology 606 $aBiology 606 $aEcology 606 $aEnvironmental Health 606 $aMarine Biology 606 $aE?cologie marine$vPe?riodiques 606 $aBiologie 606 $aE?cologie 606 $aHygie?ne du milieu 606 $aBiologie marine 606 $abiology$2aat 606 $aecology$2aat 606 $amarine biology$2aat 606 $aMarine biology$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01009447 606 $aEnvironmental health$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00912999 606 $aEcology$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00901476 606 $aBiology$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00832383 606 $aMarine ecology$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01009513 606 $aMariene ecologie$2gtt 608 $aComputer network resources. 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2lcgft 615 0$aMarine ecology 615 0$aBiology. 615 0$aEcology. 615 0$aEnvironmental health. 615 0$aMarine biology. 615 12$aBiology. 615 12$aEcology. 615 12$aEnvironmental Health. 615 12$aMarine Biology. 615 6$aE?cologie marine 615 6$aBiologie. 615 6$aE?cologie. 615 6$aHygie?ne du milieu. 615 6$aBiologie marine. 615 7$abiology. 615 7$aecology. 615 7$amarine biology. 615 7$aMarine biology. 615 7$aEnvironmental health. 615 7$aEcology. 615 7$aBiology. 615 7$aMarine ecology. 615 17$aMariene ecologie. 676 $a577.7 801 0$bCSL 801 1$bCSL 801 2$bEYM 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bMUQ 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bVT2 801 2$bCUI 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bTEF 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bCCO 801 2$bUAB 801 2$bDLC 801 2$bLIP 801 2$bSFB 801 2$bBWN 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bCASUM 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bU3W 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910146357203321 996 $aMarine ecology$9763511 997 $aUNINA
