It highlights instead similarities across early modernity in terms of representations, legitimations, applications of, and motivations for violence. It seeks to integrate methodologies of the study of violence into the history of war, thereby extending the historical significance of both fields of research. Thirteen case studies outline the myriad ways in which large-scale violence was understood and used by states and non-state actors throughout the early modern period across Africa, Asia, the Americas, the Atlantic, and Europe, demonstrating that it was far more complex than would be suggested by simple narratives of conquest and resistance. Moreover, key features of imperial violence apply equally to large-scale violence within societies. As the authors argue, violence was a continuum, ranging from small-scale, local actions to full-blown war. The latter was privileged legally and increasingly associated with states during early modernity, but its legitimacy was frequently contested and many of its violent forms, such as raiding and destruction of buildings and crops, could be found in activities not officially classed as war. 606 $aTechnology & Engineering / Agriculture$2bisacsh 606 $aTechnology 610 $aBanditry. 610 $aEarly Modern World. 610 $aIdeology. 610 $aMilitarisation. 610 $aPiracy. 610 $aRaiding. 610 $aRestraint. 610 $aSlavery. 610 $aViolence. 610 $aWar. 615 7$aTechnology & Engineering / Agriculture 615 0$aTechnology 676 $a363.3209 702 $aCharters$b Erica 702 $aHoullemare$b Marie 702 $aWilson$b Peter H 801 0$bScCtBLL 801 1$bScCtBLL 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996552365503316 996 $aA global history of early modern violence$92565166 997 $aUNISA LEADER 02962oas 2200949 a 450 001 9910145873603321 005 20251105213014.0 011 $a1879-2170 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2012577-X 035 $a(DE-599)2012577-X 035 $a(OCoLC)60630674 035 $a(CONSER) 2005263278 035 $a(CKB)954925556447 035 $a(EXLCZ)99954925556447 100 $a20050614a19879999 sy a 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurun||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aInternational journal of machine tools & manufacture 210 $aOxford ;$aNew York $cPergamon$d1987- 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 300 $a"Design, research & application." 300 $aPublished: Amsterdam : Elsevier, <2004-> 300 $aTitle from pdf image of cover (ScienceDirect, viewed Mar. 15, 2007). 300 $aSome issues also have distinctive titles. 311 08$a0890-6955 330 8 $a"The international journal of machine tools and manufacture is concerned primarily with manufacturing machines and processes applied to the manufacture of engineering components mainly in metals but also in composites, ceramics and electronic materials." 517 1 $aInternational journal of machine tools and manufacture 517 3 $aMachine tools & manufacture 531 0 $aInt. j. mach. tools manuf. 606 $aMachine-tools$vPeriodicals 606 $aManufacturing processes$vPeriodicals 606 $aMachine-tools$vPeriodicals 606 $aManufacturing processes$vPeriodicals 606 $aMachines-outils$xPe?riodiques 606 $aFabrication$xPe?riodiques 606 $aMachines-outils$vPe?riodiques 606 $aFabrication$vPe?riodiques 606 $aMachine-tools$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01004896 606 $aManufacturing processes$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01008139 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 615 0$aMachine-tools 615 0$aManufacturing processes 615 0$aMachine-tools 615 0$aManufacturing processes 615 6$aMachines-outils$xPe?riodiques. 615 6$aFabrication$xPe?riodiques. 615 6$aMachines-outils 615 6$aFabrication 615 7$aMachine-tools. 615 7$aManufacturing processes. 676 $a621.9/02 801 0$bOCLCS 801 1$bOCLCS 801 2$bTXA 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bGUA 801 2$bU9S 801 2$bGUA 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bCUD 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bNLE 801 2$bUKMGB 801 2$bVT2 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bUAB 801 2$bAUD 801 2$bOCLCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910145873603321 996 $aInternational journal of machine tools & manufacture$9793548 997 $aUNINA
