Merchants from predominantly Hamburg and Bremen established direct trade relations with these islands in the late 15th century, and managed to control the international trade with Iceland, the Faroes and Shetland for much of the 16th century. However, the Hanseatic commercial infrastructure was absent in the North Atlantic, which forced these merchants to develop new trade strategies. Besides a critical re-evaluation of the economic and political conditions, this volume offers a comprehensive study of the organisation of the trade and the methods used to establish and maintain networks between islanders and German merchants. Moreover, it analyses the role and socio-economic position of the communities of merchants with the North Atlantic in their home towns. The book shows that the North Atlantic trade was anything but insignificant. It was a dynamic and integral part of the trade network of the northern German cities, and its study is highly relevant for the economic history of Northern Europe. 606 $aHISTORY / Modern / General$2bisacsh 607 $aGermany$xCommerce$xHistory 607 $aGermany$2fast 608 $aHistory.$2fast 610 $aEconomic history. 610 $aHanse. 610 $aNorth Atlantic. 615 7$aHISTORY / Modern / General. 676 $a382.0943 700 $aHolterman$b Bart, $4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0864192 712 02$aLeibniz-Gemeinschaft$4fnd$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/fnd 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996360036503316 996 $aThe Fish Lands$91928877 997 $aUNISA LEADER 01558oas 2200613 a 450 001 9910144747003321 005 20251105213014.0 035 $a(OCoLC)269412899 035 $a(CONSER) 2009252840 035 $a(CKB)1000000000378173 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2425585-3 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000378173 100 $a20081106a20049999 sy 101 0 $afre 135 $aurun||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aActivite?s $erevue e?lectronique 210 $aVitry-sur-Seine $cSocie?te? d'Ergonomie de Langue Franc?aise 215 $a1 online resource 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 311 08$a1765-2723 517 1 $a@Ctivite?s 531 1 $aActivite?s 606 $aHuman engineering$vPeriodicals 606 $aErgonomie$vPe?riodiques 606 $aHuman engineering$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00963014 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 615 0$aHuman engineering 615 6$aErgonomie 615 7$aHuman engineering. 712 02$aSocie?te? d'ergonomie de langue franc?aise. 801 0$bOCLCS 801 1$bOCLCS 801 2$bOCLCS 801 2$bWAU 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bCUS 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCA 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bVT2 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bCZL 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bUEJ 801 2$bOCLCQ 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910144747003321 996 $aActivités$92180549 997 $aUNINA
