King John's letter to the emperor-elect Frederick II, 12 November 1219. 330 $aJohn of Brienne's progress, from mid-ranking knightly status to king of Jerusalem and, later, Latin emperor of Constantinople, traces one of the most remarkable careers in the entire medieval period. But how and why did he achieve such heights? This biographical study of aristocratic social and geographical mobility in the 'Age of the Crusades' reassesses John's fascinating life, and explores how families and dynasticism, politics, intrigue, religion and war all contributed to John's unprecedented career. John was a major figure in the history of the thirteenth-century Mediterranean, and yet very much a product of the workings of the society of his day. This book reveals how John's life, and its multifarious connections to France, Italy, the German empire and the papacy, can illuminate the broad panorama of the early thirteenth-century world, and the zenith of the crusading movement. 606 $aCrusades$yFifth, 1218-1221 606 $aNobility$zFrance$vBiography 607 $aJerusalem$xHistory$yLatin Kingdom, 1099-1244 607 $aIstanbul (Turkey)$xHistory 615 0$aCrusades 615 0$aNobility 676 $a956.94/032 676 $aB 686 $aHIS010000$2bisacsh 700 $aPerry$b Guy J. The conference was located in Madrid, Spain during May 5?6, 2003, organized locally by the Technical University of Madrid. AWIC 2003 aimed to be the rst of a series of conferences on Web Intelligence, to be celebrated annually, alternatively in Europe and America, starting in Madrid. It was born as an activity of the recently created WIC-Poland Research Centre and the WIC-Spain Research Centre, bothbelongingtotheWebIntelligenceConsortium(WIC) (http://wi-consortium.org).AWIC 2003 was supported with grants from the S- nish Ministry for Science and Technology and the European Network of Excellence in Knowledge Discovery, KDNet. AWIC 2003 brought together scientists, engineers, computer users, and students to exchange and share their experiences, new ideas, and research results about all aspects (theory, applications, andtools)ofarti cialintelligencetechniquesappliedtoWeb-based systems, and to discuss the practical challenges encountered and the solutions adopted. Almost 70 contributions were submitted. After a preliminary evaluation, 60 of these papers were accepted to the conference and were assigned at least two reviewers from the international program committee. Out of this 60, 33 were conditionally accepted, and 32 of them were nally accepted after the conditions set by the reviewers had been met, which resulted in an acceptance ratio of 45%. 410 0$aLecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence ;$v2663 606 $aArtificial intelligence 606 $aInformation storage and retrieval systems 606 $aComputer science 606 $aInformation systems 606 $aPopular Computer Science$3http://scigraph.springernature.com/things/product-market-codes/Q23000 606 $aArtificial Intelligence$3http://scigraph.springernature.com/things/product-market-codes/I21000 606 $aInformation Storage and Retrieval$3http://scigraph.springernature.com/things/product-market-codes/I18032 606 $aInformation Systems Applications (incl.
