In his innovative analysis, Jon Holtzman uses food as a way to contextualize and measure the profound changes occurring in Samburu social and material life. He shows that if Samburu reaction to the new foods is primarily negative-they are referred to disparagingly as "gray food" and "government food"-it is also deeply ambivalent. For example, the Samburu attribute a host of social maladies to these dietary changes, including selfishness and moral decay. Yet because the new foods save lives during famines, the same individuals also talk of the triumph of reason over an antiquated culture and speak enthusiastically of a better life where there is less struggle to find food. Through detailed analysis of a range of food-centered arenas, Uncertain Tastes argues that the experience of food itself-symbolic, sensuous, social, and material-is intrinsically characterized by multiple and frequently conflicting layers. 410 0$aACLS Fellows' Publications. 517 3 $aMemory, ambivalence, and the politics of eating in Samburu, northern Kenya 606 $aSamburu (African people)$xFood 606 $aSamburu (African people)$xDomestic animals 606 $aSamburu (African people)$xSocial conditions 606 $aFood habits$zKenya$zSamburu District 606 $aFood preferences$zKenya$zSamburu District 606 $aFood$xSymbolic aspects$zKenya$zSamburu District 606 $aCulture conflict$zKenya$zSamburu District 606 $aSocial change$zKenya$zSamburu District 607 $aSamburu District (Kenya)$xSocial conditions 607 $aSamburu District (Kenya)$xEconomic conditions 615 0$aSamburu (African people)$xFood. 615 0$aSamburu (African people)$xDomestic animals. 615 0$aSamburu (African people)$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aFood habits 615 0$aFood preferences 615 0$aFood$xSymbolic aspects 615 0$aCulture conflict 615 0$aSocial change 676 $a641.30089/965 700 $aHoltzman$b Jon$01791561 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910973469503321 996 $aUncertain tastes$94329207 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01102nas 2200349 c 450 001 9910143681003321 005 20251012103911.0 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2139589-5 035 $a(OCoLC)1368149301 035 $a(DE-101)025767488 035 $a(CKB)1000000000532996 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000532996 100 $a20040316a17589999 |y | 101 0 $ager 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aAbhandlungen der Holla?ndischen Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften zu Haarlem$f... mit einigen Anmerkungen versehen von Abraham Gotthelf Ka?stner 210 31$aAltenburg$c[Verlag nicht ermittelbar]$d1758- 215 $aOnline-Ressource 517 1 $aHarlem 608 $aZeitschrift$2gnd-content 676 $a000 702 $aKa?stner$b Abraham Gotthelf$f1719-1800$4ctb 801 0$b0355 801 1$bDE-101 801 2$b9999 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910143681003321 996 $aAbhandlungen der Holländischen Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften zu Haarlem$91953727 997 $aUNINA
