As developed here, that term designates not the quick coup d'état of 1868 but a three-centuries-long project of rehabilitating an ancient map for modern purposes. Drawing on a wide range of geographical documents from Shinano (present-day Nagano Prefecture), Wigen argues that both the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate (1600-1868) and the reformers of the Meiji era (1868-1912) recruited the classical map to serve the cause of administrative reform. Nor were they alone; provincial men of letters played an equally critical role in bringing imperial geography back to life in the countryside. To substantiate these claims, Wigen traces the continuing career of the classical court's most important unit of governance-the province-in central Honshu. 410 0$aAsia--local studies/global themes ;$v17. 606 $aCartography$zJapan$xHistory 607 $aNagano-ken (Japan)$xHistorical geography 607 $aNagano-ken (Japan)$xHistory 607 $aJapan$xAdministrative and political divisions$xHistory 607 $aJapan$xMaps$xHistory 607 $aJapan$xHistorical geography 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aCartography$xHistory. 676 $a911/.520903 700 $aWigen$b Ka?ren$f1958-$01011841 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910463120803321 996 $aA malleable map$92450590 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01971oas 2200697 a 450 001 9910143101803321 005 20260218112207.0 035 $a(OCoLC)469883673 035 $a(CONSER) 2010263353 035 $a(CKB)1000000000772612 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2502099-7 035 $a(DE-599)2502099-7 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000772612 100 $a20090907a20079999 uy 101 0 $apor 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aEspac?o ameri?ndio 210 $a[Porto Alegre] $cNu?cleo de Antropologia da Sociedades Indi?genas e Tradicionais$d[2007]- 311 08$a1982-6524 606 $aIndians of South America$zBrazil$vPeriodicals 606 $aPeasants$zBrazil$vPeriodicals 606 $aEthnology$zBrazil$vPeriodicals 606 $aEthnology$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00916106 606 $aIndians of South America$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00969962 606 $aPeasants$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01734394 607 $aBrazil$2fast$1https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39QbtfRB9KGtqfkFTFbfB77QY 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 615 0$aIndians of South America 615 0$aPeasants 615 0$aEthnology 615 7$aEthnology. 615 7$aIndians of South America. 615 7$aPeasants. 712 02$aUniversidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul.$bNu?cleo de Antropologia da Sociedades Indi?genas e Tradicionais. 801 0$bQE2 801 1$bQE2 801 2$bYAM 801 2$bHEBIS 801 2$bTXA 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bDEBBG 801 2$bGWDNB 801 2$bTXA 801 2$bCUS 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCA 801 2$bSRU 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bAUD 801 2$bOCLCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910143101803321 996 $aEspaço ameríndio$92033598 997 $aUNINA
