However, Daniel O'Neill turns that latter belief on its head. This fresh and innovative book shows that Burke was a passionate supporter and staunch defender of the British Empire in the eighteenth century, whether in the New World, India, or Ireland. Moreover-and against a growing body of contemporary scholarship that rejects the very notion that Burke was an exemplar of conservatism-O'Neill demonstrates that Burke's defense of empire was in fact ideologically consistent with his conservative opposition to the French Revolution. Burke's logic of empire relied on two opposing but complementary theoretical strategies: Ornamentalism, which stressed cultural similarities between "civilized" societies, as he understood them, and Orientalism, which stressed the putative cultural differences distinguishing "savage" societies from their "civilized" counterparts. This incisive book also shows that Burke's argument had lasting implications, as his development of these two justifications for empire prefigured later intellectual defenses of British imperialism. 410 0$aBerkeley series in British studies ;$v10. 606 $aImperialism$y18th century 607 $aGreat Britain$xPolitics and government$y18th century 610 $a18th century british empire. 610 $a18th century imperialism. 610 $abritish colonialism. 610 $abritish history. 610 $abritish political thought. 610 $aburkes defense of empire. 610 $acivilized societies. 610 $acultural differences. 610 $acultural similarities. 610 $afounding father of conservatism. 610 $afrench revolution. 610 $alogic of empire. 610 $amodern conservatism. 610 $aorientalism. 610 $aornamentalism. 610 $aothering. 610 $apolitical philosophy. 610 $apolitics and government of great britain. 610 $asavage societies. 615 0$aImperialism 676 $a325/.32 700 $aO'Neill$b Daniel$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01515879 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910798040603321 996 $aEdmund Burke and the Conservative Logic of Empire$93751936 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02446oas 2200841 a 450 001 9910142647903321 005 20250814213021.0 011 $a2327-4182 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2543785-9 035 $a(OCoLC)60628351 035 $a(CONSER) 2010235200 035 $a(CKB)954925503207 035 $a(EXLCZ)99954925503207 100 $a20050614a19819999 sy b 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurun||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aAnales de la literatura espan?ola contempora?nea 210 $aLincoln, Neb. $cSociety of Spanish and Spanish-American Studies$d1981- 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 300 $aPublished: Boulder, Colo., 1986- 311 08$a0272-1635 517 1 $aALEC 606 $aSpanish literature$y20th century$xHistory and criticism$vPeriodicals 606 $aSpanish literature$y20th century$vBibliography$vPeriodicals 606 $aLitte?rature espagnole$y20e sie?cle$xHistoire et critique$vPe?riodiques 606 $aRoman espagnol$y20e sie?cle$xHistoire et critique$vPe?riodiques 606 $aSpanish literature$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01128568 606 $aLetterkunde$2gtt 606 $aSpaans$2gtt 608 $aBibliographies.$2fast 608 $aCriticism, interpretation, etc.$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2lcgft 608 $aBibliographies.$2lcgft 615 0$aSpanish literature$xHistory and criticism 615 0$aSpanish literature 615 6$aLitte?rature espagnole$xHistoire et critique 615 6$aRoman espagnol$xHistoire et critique 615 7$aSpanish literature. 615 17$aLetterkunde. 615 17$aSpaans. 676 $a860/.9 712 02$aSociety of Spanish and Spanish-American Studies. 801 0$bOCLCS 801 1$bOCLCS 801 2$bEYM 801 2$bMUX 801 2$bHUL 801 2$bOCLCE 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bDLC 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bDLC 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bVT2 801 2$bGILDS 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bUAB 801 2$bOCLCL 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910142647903321 996 $aAnales de la literatura española contemporanea$91323993 997 $aUNINA
