'A strong leader' is the answer most often given. This book looks instead at a middle level of society. Middle classes in provincial towns around the vast archipelago mediate between the state and society and help to constitute state power. 'Middle Indonesia' is a social zone connecting extremes. The Making of Middle Indonesia examines the rise of an indigenous middle class in one provincial town far removed from the capital city. Spanning the late colonial to early New Order periods, it develops an unusual, associational notion of political power. 'Soft' modalities of power included non-elite provincial people in the emerging Indonesian state. At the same time, growing inequalities produced class tensions that exploded in violence in 1965-1966. 410 0$aVerhandelingen van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde$v293/5. 606 $aMiddle class$zIndonesia$zKupang (Nusa Tenggara Timur) 606 $aCity and town life$zIndonesia$zKupang (Nusa Tenggara Timur) 606 $aCity and town life$2fast 606 $aEconomic history$2fast 606 $aMiddle class$2fast 606 $aSocial conditions$2fast 607 $aKupang (Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia)$xSocial conditions 607 $aKupang (Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia)$xEconomic conditions 607 $aIndonesia$zKupang (Nusa Tenggara Timur)$2fast 610 $aSocial classes 615 0$aMiddle class 615 0$aCity and town life 615 7$aCity and town life. 615 7$aEconomic history. 615 7$aMiddle class. 615 7$aSocial conditions. 676 $a305.5/50959868 700 $aKlinken$b Geert Arend van$0899198 801 0$bNL-LeKB 801 1$bNL-LeKB 801 2$bUkMaJRU 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910140261603321 996 $aThe Making of middle Indonesia$92151061 997 $aUNINA
