The earliest and most frequent of these encounters were with their Southeast Asian neighbors, specifically the Malayans. But by the midimperial times of the seventh through seventeenth centuries C.E., exposure to peoples from Africa, chiefly slaves arriving from the area of modern Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania, gradually displaced the original Asian "blacks" in Chinese consciousness. In The Blacks of Premodern China, Don J. Wyatt presents the previously unexamined story of the earliest Chinese encounters with this succession of peoples they have historically regarded as black.A series of maritime expeditions along the East African coastline during the early fifteenth century is by far the best known and most documented episode in the story of China's premodern interaction with African blacks. Just as their Western contemporaries had, the Chinese aboard the ships that made landfall in Africa encountered peoples whom they frequently classified as savages. Yet their perceptions of the blacks they met there differed markedly from those of earlier observers at home in that there was little choice but to regard the peoples encountered as free.The premodern saga of dealings between Chinese and blacks concludes with the arrival in China of Portuguese and Spanish traders and Italian clerics with their black slaves in tow. In Chinese writings of the time, the presence of the slaves of the Europeans becomes known only through sketchy mentions of black bondservants. Nevertheless, Wyatt argues that the story of these late premodern blacks, laboring anonymously in China under their European masters, is but a more familiar extension of the previously untold story of their ancestors who toiled in Chinese servitude perhaps in excess of a millennium earlier. 410 0$aEncounters with Asia. 606 $aAfricans$zChina$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aBlack people$zChina$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aSlavery$zChina$zGuangzhou$xHistory$yTo 1500 607 $aAfrica$xRelations$zChina 607 $aChina$xRace relations 607 $aChina$xRelations$zAfrica 607 $aGuangzhou (China)$xRace relations 610 $aAfrican Studies. 610 $aAnthropology. 610 $aAsian Studies. 610 $aFolklore. 610 $aLinguistics. 610 $aMiddle Eastern Studies. 615 0$aAfricans$xHistory 615 0$aBlack people$xHistory 615 0$aSlavery$xHistory 676 $a305.89605109 700 $aWyatt$b Don J$01519682 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910779144303321 996 $aThe Blacks of premodern China$93757939 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03103oas 2201129 a 450 001 9910138756103321 005 20250921213016.0 011 $a2054-0299 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB1462626-3 035 $a(OCoLC)44150754 035 $a(CONSER) 00227022 035 $a(CKB)954928604111 035 $a(EXLCZ)99954928604111 100 $a20000531b19901995 sy 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aPhilosophical transactions$iPhysical sciences and engineering 210 $aLondon $cRoyal Society of London$d1990-1995 300 $aSome issues also have a theme title. 311 08$a0962-8428 517 3 $aPhysical sciences and engineering 517 1 $aPhilosophical transactions of the Royal Society of London. 606 $aPhysical sciences$vPeriodicals 606 $aEngineering$vPeriodicals 606 $aPhysical sciences 606 $aMathematics 606 $aNatural Science Disciplines 606 $aNatural Science Disciplines$vPeriodicals 606 $aMathematics$vPeriodicals 606 $aMathematics 606 $aSciences physiques$vPe?riodiques 606 $aInge?nierie$vPe?riodiques 606 $aSciences physiques 606 $aMathe?matiques 606 $aphysical sciences$2aat 606 $aMathematics$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01012163 606 $aEngineering$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00910312 606 $aPhysical sciences$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01062723 606 $aExacte wetenschappen$2gtt 606 $aTechnische wetenschappen$2gtt 608 $aPeriodical. 608 $aperiodicals.$2aat 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2lcgft 608 $aPe?riodiques.$2rvmgf 615 0$aPhysical sciences 615 0$aEngineering 615 0$aPhysical sciences. 615 0$aMathematics. 615 12$aNatural Science Disciplines. 615 12$aNatural Science Disciplines 615 22$aMathematics 615 22$aMathematics. 615 6$aSciences physiques 615 6$aInge?nierie 615 6$aSciences physiques. 615 6$aMathe?matiques. 615 7$aphysical sciences. 615 7$aMathematics. 615 7$aEngineering. 615 7$aPhysical sciences. 615 17$aExacte wetenschappen. 615 17$aTechnische wetenschappen. 676 $a506 712 02$aRoyal Society (Great Britain), 801 0$bEYM 801 1$bEYM 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bUMC 801 2$bOCLCE 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bGILDS 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bAU@ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCA 801 2$bTEF 801 2$bUBY 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCL 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910138756103321 996 $aPhilosophical transactions$91957303 997 $aUNINA
