The volume includes essays from a range of scholars working in philosophy, law, Francophone studies, and comparative literature, including established Derridians, activist scholars, and emerging scholars. These essays attempt to elucidate and expand upon Derrida's deconstruction of the theologico-political logic of the death penalty in order to construct a new form of abolitionism, one not rooted in the problematic logics of sovereign power. These essays provide remarkable insight into Derrida?s ethical and political projects; this volume will not only explore the implications of Derrida?s thought on capital punishment and mass incarceration, but will also help to further elucidate the philosophical groundwork for his later deconstructions of sovereign power and the human/animal divide. Because Derrida is deconstructing the logic of the death penalty, rather than the death penalty itself, his seminars will prove useful to scholars and activists opposing all forms of state sanctioned killing. In compiling this volume, our goals were twofold: first, to make a case for Derrida's continuing importance in debates on capital punishment, mass incarceration, and police brutality, and second, to construct a new, versatile abolitionism, one capable of confronting all forms the death penalty might take. 410 0$aFordham scholarship online. 606 $aPower (Social sciences) 606 $aImprisonment$xMoral and ethical aspects 606 $aCapital punishment$xMoral and ethical aspects 606 $aCapital punishment$xPhilosophy 608 $aElectronic books. 610 $aCapital Punishment. 610 $aDeath Penalty Abolition. 610 $aDeath Penalty. 610 $aDeconstruction. 610 $aJacques Derrida. 610 $aMass Incarceration. 610 $aPolitical Theology. 610 $aPrison Industrial Complex. 610 $aPsychoanalysis. 610 $aSovereignty. 615 0$aPower (Social sciences) 615 0$aImprisonment$xMoral and ethical aspects. 615 0$aCapital punishment$xMoral and ethical aspects. 615 0$aCapital punishment$xPhilosophy. 676 $a364.6601 701 $aAnderson$b Nicole$0938502 701 $aChenoweth$b Katie$01028449 701 $aGuenther$b Lisa$01028450 701 $aHowells$b Christina$0966256 701 $aKamuf$b Peggy$0251640 701 $aKuiken$b Kir$01028451 701 $aMarder$b Elissa$0973924 701 $aNaas$b Michael$0689709 701 $aOliver$b Kelly$0689708 701 $aRottenberg$b Elizabeth$0992195 701 $aSaghafi$b Kas$0704713 701 $aThurschwell$b Adam$01028452 701 $aTyson$b Sarah$01028453 702 $aOliver$b Kelly$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aStraub$b Stephanie$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910478882603321 996 $aDeconstructing the Death Penalty$92444474 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04549 am 22005653u 450 001 9910137640403321 005 20221206104811.0 010 $a1-921536-83-7 035 $a(CKB)3170000000065271 035 $a(EBL)4694289 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000764465 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11414054 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000764465 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10776304 035 $a(PQKB)10416464 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4694289 035 $a(WaSeSS)Ind00043485 035 $a(WaSeSS)IndRDA00120835 035 $a(EXLCZ)993170000000065271 100 $a20200608d2009 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $auran#---|u|u| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 14$aThe dilemmas of engagement $ethe role of consultation in governance /$fJenny Stewart 210 1$aCanberra, Australian Capital Territory :$cAustralian National University E Press,$d2009. 215 $a1 online resource (98 pages) 225 0 $aAustralia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 08$aPrint version: 9781921536823 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references. 327 $aTable of Contents; Jenny Stewart; Acknowledgments; Introduction; 1. 1.
