West Papuans have crossed boundaries to seek asylum since 1962, usually eastward into Papua New Guinea (PNG), and occasionally southward to Australia. Between 1984-86, around 11,000 people crossed into PNG seeking asylum. After the Government of PNG acceded to the United Nations Convention and Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees, West Papuans were relocated from informal camps on the international border to a single inland location called East Awin. This volume provides an ethnography of that settlement based on the author's fieldwork carried out in 1998-99. The various paths of flight and boundaries crossed, and people's efforts to inhabit East Awin the empty rainforest, seek to capture the texture of West Papuan displacement."--Provided by publisher. 410 0$aMonographs in anthropology series. 606 $aRefugees$zPapua New Guinea$zEast Awin 606 $aRefugees$zIndonesia$zPapua 606 $aEthnology$zPapua New Guinea$zEast Awin 610 $aeast awin 610 $apapua new guinea 610 $aethnology 610 $arefugees 610 $aIndonesia 610 $aIndonesian language 610 $aSago 610 $aWestern New Guinea 615 0$aRefugees 615 0$aRefugees 615 0$aEthnology 676 $a305.8009953 700 $aGlazebrook$b Diana$0801560 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bUkMaJRU 912 $a9910137628903321 996 $aPermissive residents$92029351 997 $aUNINA
