Opposing one and the other can only generate a schizophrenic consciousness, at the origin, in particular, of the religious or secular fundamentals that we know. For Abd el-Kader, the authentic spiritual tradition can only be revived by actualizing itself in the here and now, by embracing the ever-renewed realities of time and place. The texts presented in this book come from two conferences organized in Damascus (October 2008) and Strasbourg (May 2009). They reflect different aspects of the life and work of a modern day spiritualist who embodied this delicate balance and became, according to the Sufi adage, the "son of his time" (ibn waqtihi).
