He is well known for his varied career as an artist, a celebrated photographer and a museum curator. However, Steichen is less known for his pivotal role in shaping America's first experiments in aerial photography as a tool for intelligence gathering in what may be called his 'lost years'. In Camera Aloft, Von Hardesty tells how Steichen volunteered in 1917 to serve in the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). He rose rapidly in the ranks of the Air Service, emerging as Chief of Air Photography during the dramatic final offensives of the war. His photo sections were responsible for the rapid processing of aerial images gained through the daily and hazardous sorties over the front and in the enemy rear areas. What emerged in the eighteen months of his active service was a new template for modern aerial reconnaissance. The aerial camera, as with new weapons such as the machine gun, the tank and the airplane, profoundly transformed modern warfare. 410 0$aCambridge Centennial of Flight. 606 $aWorld War, 1914-1918$xPhotography 606 $aAerial observation (Military science)$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aWorld War, 1914-1918$xAerial operations, American 606 $aWorld War, 1914-1918$vPictorial works 606 $aWorld War, 1914-1918$xCampaigns$zWestern Front 606 $aWar photographers$zUnited States$vBiography 606 $aWar photography$zUnited States 615 0$aWorld War, 1914-1918$xPhotography. 615 0$aAerial observation (Military science)$xHistory 615 0$aWorld War, 1914-1918$xAerial operations, American. 615 0$aWorld War, 1914-1918 615 0$aWorld War, 1914-1918$xCampaigns 615 0$aWar photographers 615 0$aWar photography 676 $a940.4/4973092 676 $aB 700 $aHardesty$b Von$f1939-$01074790 702 $aEisman$b Gene 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910137218503321 996 $aCamera aloft$92581864 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01539oam 2200445Ia 450 001 9910702980203321 005 20091208093106.0 035 $a(CKB)4330000001936850 035 $a(OCoLC)439106674 035 $a(EXLCZ)994330000001936850 100 $a20090924d2009 ua 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurmn||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aPotential for development of solar and wind resource in Bhutan$b[electronic resource] /$fPaul Gilman, Shannon Cowlin and Donna Heimiller 210 1$aGolden, Colo. :$cNational Renewable Energy Laboratory,$d[2009] 215 $a1 online resource (vi, 36 pages) $cillustrations 225 1 $aTechnical report ;$vNREL/TP-6A2-46547 300 $aTitle from title screen (viewed September 24, 2009). 300 $a"September 2009." 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (pages 35-36). 606 $aWind power$zBhutan 606 $aSolar energy$zBhutan 606 $aRenewable energy sources$zBhutan 615 0$aWind power 615 0$aSolar energy 615 0$aRenewable energy sources 700 $aGilman$b Paul$01399361 701 $aHeimiller$b Donna$01382981 701 $aCowlin$b Shannon C$01399362 712 02$aNational Renewable Energy Laboratory (U.S.) 801 0$bSOE 801 1$bSOE 801 2$bGPO 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910702980203321 996 $aPotential for development of solar and wind resource in Bhutan$93464450 997 $aUNINA
