All things considered. 330 $aJust war theory exists to stop armies and countries from using armed force without good cause. But how do we decide whether a use of armed force is just or unjust? In this original book, John W. Lango takes some distinctive approaches to the ethics of armed conflict. 1. A revisionist approach that involves generalising traditional just war principles, so that responsible agents can apply them to all forms of armed conflict. 2. A cosmopolitan approach that features the Security Council. 3. A preventive approach that emphasises alternatives to armed force, including negotiation, nonviolent action and peacekeeping missions. 4. A human rights approach that encompasses not only armed humanitarian intervention but also armed invasion, armed revolution and all other forms of armed conflict. Using these principles, he discusses issues surrounding just cause, last resort, proportionality and noncombatant immunity. He then applies them to hot topics in international conflicts including drone strikes, no-fly zones, moral dilemmas, deterrence, intelligence, legitimate authority, escalation and peace agreements, drawing on real-world case studies from recent conflicts in countries including Afghanistan, Darfur, Libya and South Sudan. 606 $aJust war doctrine 606 $aWar$xMoral and ethical aspects 610 $aPolitical Science 610 $aBurden of proof (law) 610 $aDeontological ethics 610 $aHuman rights 610 $aMilitary 610 $aMorality 610 $aNon-combatant 610 $aUnited Nations 610 $aUnited Nations Security Council 610 $aWar 615 0$aJust war doctrine. 615 0$aWar$xMoral and ethical aspects. 676 $a172.42 700 $aLango$b John W.$0911677 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996465258203316 996 $aThe ethics of armed conflict$92041528 997 $aUNISA LEADER 02211oas 2200745 a 450 001 9910890964003321 005 20251106213014.0 011 $a1581-9280 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2174456-7 035 $a(OCoLC)62776448 035 $a(CONSER) 2010252684 035 $a(CKB)1000000000222767 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000222767 100 $a20060104a20049999 uy 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurmnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aE-Preservation science 210 $aIvanc?na Gorica, Slovenia $cMorana RTD 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 300 $a"Scientific research for the preservation of cultural heritage." 311 08$a1854-3928 517 1 $aEPS 606 $aCultural property$xProtection$xResearch$vPeriodicals 606 $aCultural property$xProtection$vPeriodicals 606 $aHistoric preservation$vPeriodicals 606 $aPreservation of materials$vPeriodicals 606 $aPre?servation historique$vPe?riodiques 606 $aConservation des mate?riaux$vPe?riodiques 606 $aCultural property$xProtection$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00885019 606 $aHistoric preservation$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00957821 606 $aPreservation of materials$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01075689 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 615 0$aCultural property$xProtection$xResearch 615 0$aCultural property$xProtection 615 0$aHistoric preservation 615 0$aPreservation of materials 615 6$aPre?servation historique 615 6$aConservation des mate?riaux 615 7$aCultural property$xProtection. 615 7$aHistoric preservation. 615 7$aPreservation of materials. 801 0$bABC 801 1$bABC 801 2$bDLC 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bSMI 801 2$bCUS 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bWAU 801 2$bHEBIS 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bVT2 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bLVT 801 2$bOCLCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910890964003321 996 $aE-Preservation science$94261309 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01515nas 2200397-a 450 001 9910136682803321 005 20240413023747.0 035 $a(CKB)110978984252880 035 $a(CONSER)---96657753- 035 $a(EXLCZ)99110978984252880 100 $a19950118b19uu2001 --- - 101 0 $aeng 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aBooks on Japan in western languages recently acquired by the National Diet Library 210 $aTokyo, Japan $cNational Diet Library, Library Cooperation Dept.$d-2002 215 $a1 online resource 311 $aPrint version: Books on Japan in western languages recently acquired by the National Diet Library.
