Dennoch beginnt sich abzuzeichnen, dass das spätantike Antiochia nicht die heile Mustersiedlung gewesen ist, als die sie viele Schriftsteller zeichnen, sondern eine Metropole, die im Gefolge von militärischen Zerstörungen und Erdbeben, aber auch von demographischem und wirtschaftlichem Wandel seit dem 4. Jh. n.Chr. einschneidende Stadtumbauten erlebte.
