After devoting considerable attention to the circle surrounding the band The Plastic People of the Universe and their manager, the poet Ivan M. Jirous, Machovec turns outward to examine the broader concept of the underground, comparing the Czech incarnation not only with the movements of its Central and Eastern European neighbors, but also with those in the world at large. In one essay, he reflects on the so-called Pulnoc Editions, which published illegal texts in the darkest days of the late forties and early fifties. In other essays, Machovec examines the relationship between illegal texts published at home (samizdat) and those smuggled out to be published abroad (tamizdat), as well as the range of literature that can be classified as samizdat, drawing attention to movements frequently overlooked by literary critics. In his final, previously unpublished essay, Machovec examines Jirous's "Report on the Third Czech Musical Revival" not as a merely historical document, but as literature itself. 606 $aUnderground literature$zCzechoslovakia 606 $aCzech literature$y20th century 607 $aCzechoslovakia$2fast 615 0$aUnderground literature 615 0$aCzech literature 676 $a891.8609005 700 $aMachovec$b Martin$f1956-$01555656 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910794099003321 996 $aWriting underground$93817727 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01918oas 22007573 450 001 9910133680703321 005 20251105213014.0 011 $a2689-3908 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2716492-5 035 $a(OCoLC)988255212 035 $a(CONSER) 2019202017 035 $a(CKB)110978977280602 035 $a(EXLCZ)99110978977280602 100 $a20170528a19659999 ub a 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurbn||||||abp 135 $aurbn||||||ada 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 04$aThe journal of Arizona history 210 1$aTucson, Arizona :$cState Historical Society of Arizona,$d1965- 210 3$aTucson, Arizona :$cArizona Historical Society 215 $a1 online resource 311 1 $a0021-9053 607 $aArizona$xHistory$vPeriodicals 607 $aArizona$xHistoire$vPe?riodiques 607 $aArizona (Stany Zjednoczone ; stan)$2dbn 607 $aArizona$2fast 608 $aperiodicals.$2aat 608 $aCzasopismo historyczne.$2dbn 608 $aHistory.$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2lcgft 608 $aPe?riodiques.$2rvmgf 676 $a979.1 676 $a979 712 02$aArizona Historical Society. 712 02$aArizona Pioneers' Historical Society. 801 0$bOCLCE 801 1$bOCLCE 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bCRU 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bEYM 801 2$bTOH 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bUAB 801 2$bVT2 801 2$bRCE 801 2$bU3W 801 2$bWYU 801 2$bDLC 801 2$bCUS 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bEZC 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bSXB 801 2$bOCLCL 801 2$bSFB 801 2$bOCLCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910133680703321 996 $aThe journal of Arizona history$92563275 997 $aUNINA
