330   $aAs this book is intended as a "guide" to the first steps in German linguistics, illustrative rather than exhaustive so as not to be too technical, it required a somewhat particular mode of presentation. Several times the reader will find paragraphs in smaller characters whose function is as follows. While these paragraphs are relatively long, they delve into a topic covered by the section in which they appear. In this case, the reader can leave them aside for a first reading and resume them later. If, on the other hand, they are brief, only a few lines, two cases arise: either they are the digest of a development which comes to an end where they appear, or they compare French and German linguistic terminologies where they do not agree and lend themselves to misunderstanding. In these cases, they are intended as a terminological reminder.
