Si au XXe siècle la ville a connu un rétrécissement de cette aire d?influence et une marginalisation politique et économique, elle a retrouvé depuis une vingtaine d?années une certaine prospérité pour deux raisons majeures : d?abord, une collaboration plus ouverte que par le passé avec le pouvoir central et ensuite, son dynamisme et sa capacité à développer des activités commerciales, industrielles et culturelles aussi bien à l?échelle locale que régionale et cela, dans le contexte d?une libéralisation très contrôlée de l?économie syrienne.
