When families in need sought help from the safety net, however, they found themselves trapped in a system that increasingly tied public assistance to private employment. In The Workfare State, Eva Bertram recounts the compelling history of the evolving social contract from the New Deal to the present to show how a need-based entitlement was replaced with a work-conditioned safety net, heightening the economic vulnerability of many poor families. The Workfare State challenges the conventional understanding of the development of modern public assistance policy. New Deal and Great Society Democrats expanded federal assistance from the 1930's to the 1960's, according to the standard account. After the 1980 election, the tide turned and Republicans ushered in a new conservative era in welfare politics. Bertram argues that the decisive political struggles took place in the 1960's and 1970's, when Southern Democrats in Congress sought to redefine the purposes of public assistance in ways that would preserve their region's political, economic, and racial order. She tells the story of how the South?the region with the nation's highest levels of poverty and inequality and least generous social welfare policies?won the fight to rewrite America's antipoverty policy in the decades between the Great Society and the 1996 welfare reform. Their successes provided the foundation for leaders in both parties to build the contemporary workfare state?just as deindustrialization and global economic competition made low-wage jobs less effective at providing income security and mobility. 410 0$aAmerican governance. 606 $aWelfare recipients$xEmployment$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aWelfare recipients$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aPublic welfare$xPolitical aspects$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aWelfare state$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aWelfare recipients$xEmployment$xHistory 615 0$aWelfare recipients$xHistory 615 0$aPublic welfare$xPolitical aspects$xHistory 615 0$aWelfare state$xHistory 676 $a362.5/840973 700 $aBertram$b Eva$01057558 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910464250603321 996 $aThe workfare state$92492960 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01019nam0-2200337---450 001 990009442890403321 005 20230614163956.0 010 $a88-7823-019-7 035 $a000944289 035 $aFED01000944289 035 $a(Aleph)000944289FED01 035 $a000944289 100 $a20111006d1989----km-y0itay50------ba 101 0 $aita 102 $aIT 105 $a--------001yy 200 1 $aOnore e storia nelle societą mediterranee$ecittą di Palermo, Arcidonna, atti del Seminario internazionale, Palermo, 3-5 dicembre 1987$fa cura di Giovanna Fiume 210 $aPalermo$cLa luna$d1989 215 $aIV, 434 p.$d20 cm 610 0 $aDonne$aMoralitą 676 $a305.4$v22$zita 702 1$aFiume,$bGiovanna$f<1948- > 801 0$aIT$bUNINA$gRICA$2UNIMARC 901 $aBK 912 $a990009442890403321 952 $aN05.992$b10752$fDECTS 952 $aMAR / FIU 1$b9893$fbfs 959 $aBFS 959 $aDECTS 996 $aOnore e storia nelle societą mediterranee$993372 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01554oam 2200421Ka 450 001 9910692178803321 005 20031204080645.0 035 $a(CKB)5470000002351644 035 $a(OCoLC)53441731 035 9 $aocm53441731 035 $a(OCoLC)995470000002351644 035 $a(EXLCZ)995470000002351644 100 $a20031115d1998 ua 0 101 0 $aeng 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aAbstracts from the International Conference on Snow Hydrology$b[electronic resource] $ethe integration of physical, chemical, and biological systems /$fJanet Hardy, Mary Albert, and Philip Marsh, editors 210 1$aHanover, N.H. :$cU.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory,$d[1998] 225 1 $aSpecial report ;$v98-10 300 $aTitle from title screen (viewed on Nov. 15, 2003). 300 $a"6-9 October 1998." 517 $aAbstracts from the International Conference on Snow Hydrology 606 $aSnow$vCongresses 606 $aHydrology$vCongresses 608 $aConference papers and proceedings.$2lcgft 615 0$aSnow 615 0$aHydrology 701 $aHardy$b Janet P$01381178 701 $aAlbert$b Mary Remley$01383298 701 $aMarsh$b P$g(Philip)$0401008 712 02$aCold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (U.S.) 801 0$bGPO 801 1$bGPO 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910692178803321 996 $aAbstracts from the International Conference on Snow Hydrology$93427957 997 $aUNINA
